it would have blown my ear off if i swung on it. it was on the surface, not a single leaf on it. i guess i should not curse the wind as much as i do
 

I'm pretty sure you can get a handle for that at Home Depot.
175 years old? How can you tell?
 

Compared to the pick heads I have seen in the Cripple Creek Mining District, it seems to match them. They are heavier cast than modern steels.
 

i posted it in the gold prospecting forum as well. it was found in a pocket dig near redding ca. this area was heavily mined between 1850 and 1900. the pocket digs were predominant before the hydroluicing started around the 1880's. it looks to be hand forged though i am not certain. another member identified it as a drifting pick of the oldr variety.
 

there were two very large hand forged square naild in the head, those were easy to tell they were hand made. its old, really old. pre 1900
