Found a Thailand 50 Satang today what? In the USA

I about had a heart attack when I saw gold in the hole. But apparently it turned out to be bronze.
It looks like it got caught in a mower.
Can anyone see or explain how to date this?

Neat. My grandmother is Thai so I have some Thailand currency she's brought my back from Thailand over the years. Too bad I'd of been able to help if she hadn't moved back to Thailand. Also too bad it got so ate up by a mower.

The coin has the portrait and legend for Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), who reigned from 1946-2016. Since 1913, dates for the Thai calendar have been based on what we call BE dates (starting from Buddha’s Enlightenment in 543BC). So you subtract 543 from the year number to get to our AD dates.

On this coin, the date is given in the characters at the bottom of the reverse, ignoring the first two characters. Those will be the letter equivalents for ‘PH.S.’ with a stop between them and before the actual date and they relate to the expression of the calendar system. Below are the corresponding Thai numbers which will be used in the last four characters to give the date (but you have to allow for a little stylistic variation):



Difficult to read on your coin, but the last two characters are ‘00’, so it has to be ‘2500’ (ie 1957 in our calendar). So, it should read พ.ศ.๒๕๐๐ (PH.S.2500), like the one I have pictured alongside it below:



In fact, these coins were struck from 2500 (1957} until 2523 (1980) in aluminium-bronze without any change to the date on them, so it could be anywhere between those years.

Yes... but read my reply again. The same coin was struck with a 'frozen' date of 2500 (1957) until 2523 (1980). They didn't change it for 24 years.
