Detector(s) used
Minelab E-trac
In 1988, I moved a log house to property on which the "Great Trail" crossed. The trail ran from Fort Duquesne (later Fort Pit) to Fort Lawrence near where I now live. The two forts date to the Revelutionary war. Lawrence being the only revolutionary fort built in what is now Ohio.

For this reason, I decided to buy my first metal detector. My detector came in the mail, I added batteries, and within the first hour found this gun. This is the reason I still metal detect today........It burned a bug deep into me! lol

I have no idea if this gun is from a coon hunter loosing it in 1960, or a soldier from 1778. It obviously isn't a muzzel loader, so I would think somewhere in between. can anybody help me with make and age please?

It just covers an 8 1/2" X 11" piece of paper.

Thanks, Tim

I could not even venture a guess as to the age. That is a great find nonetheless.

I dont see a cylinder. It appears to be one shot. Why cant it be a muzzleloader?

Definitely mid 19th century and later. The hammer and grip designs tend to put it there. Likely .22 single-shot, which was not an uncommon pistol to carry hunting. Inexpensive and used to dispatch wounded game. Also for precise target shooting.

Alchemy, If that isn't it, it missed a darn good chance! Monty

Alchemy,

Yep, I think your first pic is exactly it! Thanks, I googled with less success, but I don't think I thought of putting single shot. Thanks! Great help!!

Jerry,
Thanks for the inspiration. I am going to have to get busy and do that. I actually used electrolosis to clean the inside of a Model "T" gas tank. I filled it with water and backing soda for the catalist, and it worked incredibly well.

I will do that soon, it would look really great all cleaned up!

Wow I wish I had thought of that with my old antique outboard I got rid of. Great idea.

Hi,
It is a Stevens Offhand 22 single shot. Probably a No35, but it could be a No41. Stevens was famous for making great high quality single shot pistols most were in 22 caliber, and they made several dozen different models from the 1860's to 1940 or so.
Alchemy Got it right! Great Job!
That is a great find and would look very impressive in a relic frame on the wall!

Steif,
Thanks, I am just back from vacation and just now got your post. That is cool info! Actaully, I plan on trying some electrolosis on it and doing just as you suggested (framing it under glass). It doesn't have a lot of value, but you are right, it would look really, really cool!
Thanks again
Tim

Interesting find! I am also from Bolivar but have lived in Germany for the past 23 years. Graduated from TV in 82. I wonder if we know each other? How is detecting around the area? HH, Mike

Hi Mike,
No, we probably haven't met. I Grew up in Navarre, graduated from Fairless in '73. Then moved to Minerva in '76. After the kids were raised we moved back over here to Bolivar 7 years ago. It is way cool to find somebody from the area on this forum though. I have just gotten back into detecting so the whole Bolivar thing is new to dirt fish for me. I just got a new GTAX to try after searching 3 really good looking spots with my old GTA1000 that I discovered wasn't working properly. So.......I guess I will let you know how the area is when I find out! lol Watch for good posts!

How did you end up in Germany if I may ask?

Keep in touch!
Tim
