A friend of mine at work got this in his change this morning. He asked me if I knew what it was. But I have no idea. Im guessing it's a fake....but if it is, why would it say copy on it?

It's a Chinese-made counterfeit quarter. There are token manufacturers in China who stamp out any design their customer asks for. So probably someone here in the US ordered this design so he/she could use them as slugs in vending machines or pass them off as real quarters in change. I found a counterfeit nickle of similar quality recently in change as well.

I wouldn't call it a counterfeit because there's no denomination on it. Someone may have gotten motivated for the 2009 Territories series?

Why would someone even bother trying to fake such a low denomination? They certainly wont get rich, and they certainly cant use it to undermine the US economy. Seems like more work than reward to me. :dontknow:

After thinking about it all night I came to this conclusion......it got passed off as real money. When I return the coin in the morning Im going to strongly urge he reports it. If I dug it out of the ground, thats one thing but knowing how it got to me is a bit unsettling. Maybe its a karma thing but if someone has a box full of these things, someones getting ripped off. Once reported Im sure it's confiscated but I seen it, held it and got pics of it. I have no hard feelings washing my hands from it.

If you really think about it, it's a good idea. If you counterfeited singles or fives you'd have better odds passing a bunch than you would passing twenties or fifties. How many times have you seen a clerk hold a single or a five up to the light? Would take longer to make a bunch of profit, but less chance of getting busted.

That is really cool and something to keep. I have a fake lead quarter. We sought to have a thread with fake/strange coins. Thanks for the view!

Got a few silver plated pesos. Guy was trying to sell them to me for around scrap value. As soon as I dropped the magnet & they snapped up off the table, his eyes got huge. Told him he could give them to me or we could wait for the off duty cop/security. I'll try to post up a picture tomorrow.

Anyone else got any interesting fakes? Bee fun to see.
