My first impression was maybe a hubcap from a wheel of a toy wagon; the holes around the edges would have held rivets; the axle went through the middle of course.

looks like the bell housing from a PTO
Hi Kev, I think unlikely a PTO with a square shaft but I agree, it looks like an engine part.

Cheers, Mike

Flange for some sort of storage. Hole in center was probably threaded , 1" or 1 1/2". A nipple and a valve would screw into it. Looks similiar to gas wellhead or fire hydrant flanges.

I would agree with this. Maybe some sort of blind flange.

got to thinking a bit more and maybe since u say it has a square hole it could have been some sort of diaphram housing for something with a square shaft. It does look like a standard 8 in flange though from the pics.

Does the nipple on the top have threads on the outside? If so, it would allow some type of cap, some type of packing would be added, and it could then possibly be a fire hydrant cap.

I think that may be exactly what it is. It is very heavy. I am keeping it until the end of the year, I will photograph it along with all my finds and then scrap it.

Here's a wild and unsubstantiated guess...an engine et.al. part from a tractor or other agriculture machine from days gone by.
