Found this today. What do you think?

Found this a long a river today. It is pecked all the way it was broken down the middle. But it looks like something to me. It is 4”x3 roughly hand size

Any theories on why the apparent white water stain does not carry across the "pecked" band?
I'd kind of expect an ancient tool to have a more uniform patina?

Is that just an optical illusion?

From the only side you posted, I'd say it's a full grooved axe with the bit end broken. If we could see the other side, it may reveal more.

Thanks. I was contemplating calling it a hoe but it may have sheared off straight down the middle. I can't tell for certain.

Edit: Was this found in the mid-west by chance? Ohio maybe? If not, where?

Bet it was broken in use.
Probably was a disappointment to the owner after they took the time to secure a handle to it.
