I was digging in my back yard after just moving into my newly built house. I was digging to I can plant a tree and then I stopped because I found some interesting “cloth” like material.

The cloth looked very old and was very brittle. There was no tags on it and the designs look a little “native”.

I tried google to see what I can find but nothing. Let me know what you think.

Cool find!! It has an old style coarse weave like burlap but it appears to be cotton? Maybe hand woven? Do you know any history of the area. Just guessing you may have bug into an old dump, Could be upholstery from an old chair, or a burial cloth for Fido?

It looks like burlap, either burlap or cotton don,t last too long in the ground so I,d be surprised if it,s very old.Unless it was old before it went into the ground of course.Other than that I don,t have a clue.

Had a thought, always dangerous I know but I,ve seen something like that used as a decorative piece in kitchens, just hanging or to cover something. You can sometimes find them at craft fairs and such as that.Modern stuff, hand decorated.

Looks like hand made cloth, the color of the ink and the style of the figures makes think pre 1800s, but I'm no expert..

Looks more hippieish to me, maybe 70’s

Looks to me like the kind of stiff woven fabric used for tapestry/embroidery work with a design printed on it in outline as a guide. In olden times people created their own designs and I think commercially pre-printed templates first appeared during the 1930s for creating wall-hangings and such. Still available today but now usually printed in full colour and sold in kit-form with the appropriate coloured threads needed to copy the illustration.

If you google terms like 'embroidery' or 'tapestry' together with 'template' and 'sun face' you'll see similar items but mostly illustrated in their finished form rather than as a yet-to-be-used piece.
