I’ve been traveling a lot for work doing trade shows of late, so yesterday I decided to take a break and hit a few sites that are usually overgrown or inaccessible during the summer.

Most of my ‘keepers’ for the day came from an isolated old homestead site with evidence of the dairy barn remaining. This site appears in my c1878 atlas, based on the age of the finds, I’m thinking this site was either abandoned or burnt down sometime in the 1920’s. The first find I made here was the watch fob, followed by a couple of toe-taps and a bent-up piece of flat brass. I noticed some writing on the brass, so I decided to keep it instead of throwing it in the scrap brass bucket in my truck. I also found the bird leg band and a decorative overall button here.
After a wash and straightening, I was able to make out…

“The Sovereign Bank of Canada, 6623, We unlock this bank and credit you with contents”.
Through online research I was able to find out The Sovereign Bank of Canada was formed in 1901 and went bankrupt in 1908. Their bank notes were very decorative and are highly collectible today.
“The Sovereign Bank opened in Toronto in 1901. The bank made several poor managerial decisions in a rush to get big and gain both depositor and lender accounts. The bank paid savings account interest on a quarterly basis. That was a first for Canada. The bank attracted questionable loans due to their loose lending standards. Bad accounts combined with an uneasy banking climate resulted in the banks closure in 1908. Twelve different banks came to the rescue of The Sovereign Bank so that they could absorb its branch banking interests.”
Much of the ground was still frozen, so detecting here was a challenge. I did get a great 92-93 signal in the plow soil, but I was only able to dig down 2” due to the frost, I’ll head back for this find next weekend. I then headed back to the old school site for an hour, but only managed to find a couple of pennies.

Thanks very much for looking!
Dave
PS. I did a bit more straightening of the bank savings box lid.
Being almost 120 years old it's pretty thin and fragile, so I've coated the back with Weld-Bond Glue to stabilize it... see picture.
