Fourth Weekend Brings More Civil War Greatness!

It was another great weekend at this site being cleared. It was Christmas Eve, before the sun came up. It was raining and it was cold. The mud came up to our ankles with each step but I knew it would be worth it, and it was. I had a slow start, we went straight for the new area that had been cleared during the week. Someone else had beat us there, holes were dug everywhere. I still managed to pull some eagle buttons and bullets. Some other small pieces, leather tacks and tent grommets. Then Santa gave me a spur. I was good when I found that one, but then a few feet away, the US Buckle pops out. It still has all of its hooks and some leather stuck in it. It was in the burm of dirt that was pushed to the side, I'm surprised the bull dozers didn't bend it up.

Two Issue's I have, the front is crusted with some kind of green stuff, and what is the best way to preserve the leather on the back? Should I try to clean off the front or leave it as is? Thanks.

This was an awesome find, wish it was complete though. The spur was in it, just completely rusted and fell apart.

A carved out bullet, not sure if it is supposed to be a chess piece or what.

Buttons are in rough shape, but I'll take them.

Miscellaneous pieces.

Wrong time frame, but still has some age to it. It sounded so good, was hoping it was a coin from the time period.

My God what a site!!!! I can only imagine how you must feel. You'll never forget that place and the fact that every day you hunt it is that much more history you are saving from being lost forever is outstanding. My hat is off to you Bud. Now I must go change my shirt and wipe my chin. Thanks for keeping us updated.

That's an excellent set of CW finds. The spur is a great find. Too bad about the spur but it's usually always rusted away. And the place with the paws and leather is an excellent score.

I have dug only one brass spur, and the spur part was iron and rusted like yours.
That is a nice plate and its cool to see the leather is attached. I wouldnt do much to it, as i would be afraid of the leather falling off as well.
That carved lead is cool. No idea. Looks like a babies bottle, or nipple.

lightly brush the front with a dry toothbrush and unfortunately there's not a lot you can do to preserve that leather. Great finds!
