So happy to have found this place! This gold-colored metal emblem has been bugging me for months now and I am hoping someone can help me ID it. The emblem is affixed to a small leather pouch which was attached to a gold-colored belt. The emblem itself measures approx. 2-1/4" x 1-1/2". I can't see if there are any maker's marks on the back of the emblem because it is attached to the leather with metal brads or something similar. There are no maker's marks on the pouch or belt either. It looks like it represents a fraternal organization but I can't find this particular emblem design online. Note the signs of the zodiac across the sky. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance. :)

Was it dug up and found with a metal detector? Was it cleaned?

I don't think it's fraternal. If it was it would have some silly life lesson written in Latin embossed on it. :)

The belt with pouch (with emblem attached to it) was found at a second-hand store just north of Seattle WA about a year ago. It doesn't show any evidence of ever being in the dirt or cleaned up. I'll check out the Costa Rica lead. Thanks for looking at it.

Perhaps from a steamboat company uniform?
I do see the scales of justice, and lions, but I don't know if they are being used in a zodiactricalish kind of way.

I see the scales now. What you are calling "lions" benz, looked like crabs to me. :) I'm going blind :)

Ahh, I can see how they look like crabs, but when enlarged I see them more as animals with tails going up over their backs. Both leaping toward the sun. The pattern is the same, reversed, on both sides. I can't figure out what the middle is supposed to be?

I'd be curious to see more pictures of the pouch itself... Looks like a pistol cartridge pouch?

Equador

Awesome ID. Agree. Ecuadorian.

I also agree with Ben that it looks like a pistol cartidge box. I would guess turn of the 20th C.

On the actual Coat of Arms of Ecuador, the sun is surrounded by the astrological signs for Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer representing the months March to July to symbolize the duration of the March Revolution of 1845--per Wiki.

Yes Mack, there are so many variations of this. Here for instance is an 1845 example where the mountain range is in the foreground. Then for a while the mountains seem to be more popular in the background. Then in 1895 you find the mountains in the foreground again, then back again, etc..:laughing7: I think the cartridge box is probably 1870's to 1890's too. http://www.hubert-herald.nl/Ecuador_bestanden/image028.jpg
