I Believe Anti War Song

Ah! What an era there was nothing like it before and nothing like it since.

The hippie movement was a 1960s–1970s counterculture originating in the U.S. that rejected mainstream materialism, social orthodoxy, and the Vietnam War, favoring peace, love, and personal freedom. Emerging in San Francisco, this youth-driven movement embraced communal living, psychedelic drugs, and Eastern philosophy, influencing global fashion, music, and social attitudes. The 1960s hippy movement evolved on U.S. college campuses as a reaction challenging middle-class values, "the Establishment," and cold war-era conformity. Vietnam War: Intense opposition to the war and the military draft fueled the movement's expansion and anti-government sentiment. "Flower Children": Known as "flower people," they adopted a gentle, non-doctrinaire ideology focusing on peace and harmony with nature.Communal Living: Many rejected traditional nuclear family structures for shared housing, cooperatives, and rural commune. They influenced Fashion & Appearance: Long hair for men and women, colorful clothes, second-hand clothing, and beads signaled a rejection of corporate consumerism. The hippy movement popularized environmental consciousness, vegetarianism, holistic medicine, and sexual liberation, leaving a lasting influence on our modern culture. Being a flower child of that era, I saw the beautiful, big high wave of life pass with sadness and fade away across the world.

It was an era of Consciousness Expansion: Promoted the use of psychedelic drugs like LSD and marijuana, alongside meditation and Eastern spiritual practices. Summer of Love (1967): The peak of the movement when thousands converged on San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district. Music and Art: Rock festivals like Woodstock and bands such as The Beatles, Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane became anthems for the culture. Its impact spread across the world through the 60s and 70s, By the early 1970s, the movement waned due to factors like drug-related issues, crime in communal areas, the end of the Vietnam War, and the maturation of participants back into mainstream society.

The world had moved on and morphed into the self-centered 80s and 90s of the new wave of the corporate consumer-driven realities of life. They say the hippy movement was a time and place for failed dreamers and idealists. But their loss was our loss because somewhere in all the chaos and turmoil of change, we had all lost our freedom.

So many great bands from that era. The People, places, freedom, and passion are gone but not forgotten.
