Fuel Mileage Increase

As far as aerodynamics on 50's era trucks? It may have been a result of the pointed hoods and rounded fenders. I think it was just the style of times. And around here, many, if not most people put camper shells and covers on their trucks for convenience. A vehicle to go to the grocery store and a vehicle to haul firewood. They are easy on and easy off. If all these milage improvements works as advertised, they should easily double our gas milage (10% here, 5% there, 20% somewhere else). Let's hear from real people with actual, verifiable evidence that it works. Not just an article on the net. I'm off my soapbox now. Later all.

Anything that is made more aerodynamic saves fuel. Pushing wind is often harder than hauling weight, to a point. A flat front end pushes far too much weight to very fuel efficient. Most cars went through an aerodynamic change in the 80's and 90's, but only in the last few have manufacturers started making trucks more aerodynmic. Good luck. rockhound

For those with the ability tobuild and or repair engines, this should be invaluable. It involves removing the heads and cutting a groove in betwen the valve seats to increase fuel economy. Yes, if doing a rebuild or major repair, while there you might as well do all the things that will increase horsepower and fuel economy, at the same time. It all comes down to efficiency. The more efficient you can burn your fuel and get the maximum amount of power out of it, then the more fuel efficient it will be. Good Luck. rockhound

A buddy of mine told me the other day, They Reintroduced the ford 5.0 in trucks.. getting some 400+ Horsepower...

Yes, Ford went back to the 5.0. but I think it is different from the earlier versions. I think the new 5.0 has overhead cams instead of overhead valves. It equals more horsepower and better fuel economy. I don't know what other improvements were made yet. Good Luck. rockhound

Yep! He also said overhead cams.. He also said they were either working on, Or already had the 351 out also.. They always have to make things better and ruin good things... Heck back in the day, Parts were so cheap, Now everything is so specific for each auto.. It is rediculous...

In the long run, The more they add to an engine, Whether electrical or vacuum.. It's more money they make off parts.. Sad how everything boils down to dollars now days..

In their attempt to make things less troublesome and improve efficiency they use computers and sophisticated electronics to monitor and regulate all the functions of the vehicle. While these improvement mean less hands on tinkering, the cost for designing, building, and replacing components are apprahencible to most people. Also, unless you are well versed in electronics you can make no repairs yourself, especially if you break down on the road. Some newer vehicles will not allow you to change the battery without taking it to a dealer and have the computer reprogrammed. These reasons, and others have driven the price out of reach for many Americans. The average age of most Americans vehicles are 11 years old. Economy has some effect on it and so does price. Also vehicles are lasting longer and are being built to higher standards. As new fuel mileage ratings are required by the government in 2015, there are going to be more of these systems to monitor and regulate the fuel to maintain the strickter standards. The automobile has been around over 110 years now, and as such is outdated in its design and operation. If it were introduced today, it would not be allowed because of the amount of CO2 emmissions it emits. Only when the greed of the oil companies are satisfied will we see a newer and more economical approach to our transportation needs. Some are converting to electric while others are pursuing hydrogen as possible fuel alternatives. These will not become readily available to all until a system is in place to replace the taxes gathered from fossil fuels for road projects and other highway upkeep. Good Luck. rockhound

With gasoline predicted to top the $4 mark soon more and more people will have to make a choice between driving less or trading their vehicle for a smaller, more fuel eficient vehicle. During the spring, summer and fall a motorcycle night fit the bill as a commuter to work and back, and as a weekend pleasure riding vehicle. Those who live close to work in the city where speed limits are lower, you may get by with a bicycle, and you can always add a small motor to help you on hills or to propel you along unasssited by pedaling. Whatever choice you make may have a profound effect on how you percieve your future transportation methods. when gasoline hits $5 plus a gallon, even more stringent measures will be considered. As Iran and the U S and Israel come closer to conflict, oil will diminish flowing from the gulf. During the war, we will run short of petroleum and will need to adapt to other menas of transportation. I don't think we will revert to horses, but who knows. It will become a long, drawn out war if we attack Iran. Russia and China are both supporting Iran and may well join in a fight against us. We need to get out and leave the Persian gulf altogether, as we can't afford another war. We need to become less dependent on petroleum and start using our own resources to fuel our country.
