Ok, so I'm going to start with a little disclaimer before telling my story...I understand that coin shops are in business to make money. I agree that they should pay as little as they can and charge as much as possible on every transaction as to maximize their profits. I have only been a member of this forum for a short time, but I have seen many people get upset about a LCS "ripping" people off. I am not one of those people. So here is what just happened to my on my first visit ever to a LCS...

So I have many Silver Eagle coins that were given to me over the years. All of the ones that I have are in the box with the COA. I see them go on Ebay for anywhere from $55-$70 depending on the dates for the ones that I have. I went to the LCS because these coins have no numismatic value to me at all and I wanted to see if I could trade up for a net gain in silver because that's what I'm in this for (I figured it was worth a shot). I explained this to the gentleman who owns the LCS and told him that he would offer me what he could afford and I would simply tell him yes or no. He looks the dates up on his piece of paper that he had in his hand and then writes down a number. I was a little confused because it seemed like he was offering me WAY too much money per coin or less than the actual silver value. I asked him how much he was offering me per coin. His answer, "Well I'm giving you bid price for these and then I take half of it back." So of course I ask him how much his bid price is. He tells me that he is giving me $58 per coin and then taking half of it back because that's how he makes money. I told him I understood that he would have to give me less than they sell for, but I then pointed out to the gentleman that he was actually only giving me $29 per coin. He looks at me and says, "Well yeah. I mean they would only go for $32 for their silver value anyway." At this point I wasn't sure if he thought I was an idiot or if he was just really confused himself. I reminded him that the reason that I was trying to do this in the first place was to try to get a net gain in silver, not a loss. He was a bit confused at this statement so I explained that it didn't really do me a lot of good to walk in with 1 ounce of silver and then walk out with 9/10th of an ounce of silver (before his markup on the junk silver of course) as my goal again, is to get more silver through this transaction, not less (I will take some blame here as this was apparently not a good idea to begin with). The light went off at that point and he realized what I was talking about. So then he politely offered to bump up the amount so I would get $32 per coin so I could trade for junk silver. At this point just to humor myself, I asked him how much he was getting for $1 face value of junk. He told me $26 so I quickly calculated that it would cost me about 11% premium to trade for the junk silver, thus still losing 11% of what I walked in with. I politely thanked him and told him that I would think about it, but I just didn't want to do that right now. I had to laugh, I guess I'm better off keeping my "prettier" silver in the form of American Eagles right now!

Sorry for the long story but I thought it was funny. Before I turned him down on the American Eagles I was talking to him about the key date Buffs and V-nickels I found last week. He literally said that he didn't even want to look at them. One of the buffs was a 1915S. I guess if I'm going to try to get rid of them I need to look at Ebay?

Lol. Funny story. Keep the eagles and hunt for more silver.

I know of somewhere that will currently give you $33.62 for an ASE but it sounds like you were trying to take advantage of the LCS. You wanted to walk out with more than you brought in without paying for it, am I getting that right?

OP wanted to trade ASEs that may have some collector value for 90% junk silver. In my opinion it was not an unreasonable concept. A lot of people prefer the fine ASE to 90% junk and will pay a premium.

You might have some luck trading down at a coin show.

Are these just bullion coins or are they Proof or Burnished Uncirculated? That can change the value of the coin.

Sorry. I guess I should have clarified. They are all proof American Eagles, in the box, in their neat little case with the certificate of authenticity. I didn't really feel like I was trying to take advantage of the LCS since I see the 2010s go for close to $70 on eBay. I thought it might be a easier way to trade down without the hassle of eBay. I'm new to this so just chalk it up to being naive I guess. Surely the LCS wouldn't have thought I was taking advantage of him here, right?

He said each ASE had a COA which is a Certificate of Authenticity. The value of each coin he also mentioned was $55-70, I would imagine this is because they are collector's coins with the COA and not your run of the mill tube of ASE's that you can get your hands on everywhere at spot+$2-4.

This LCS was attempting to pay less than spot for high grade coins.

Also, to the OP, you said that the coins have no numismatic value to you...I think the word you meant to use was "sentimental value."

I understand what you were trying to do. You were trying to get numismatic value out of your ASEs and convert it into more silver ounces. I think it is a good idea, if it were to work in your favor. The LCS just wasn't thinking along the same lines. You might want to try another one, if there are more in your area. If not, it might be worth your time and effort to sell on ebay. Good luck either way.

I meant they have no collector value to me because I don't collect. But since is was trying to get numismatic value from them you are probably correct. They have no sentimental value to me. I stand corrected.

Kiggity , Hang on to those ASE's - they are proofs in the velvet boxes with the coa's - those are as good as it gets ! I should
think the collector market for those will only get hotter !!! ( A coin shop is the last place I'd go to unload them )

+1 especially since they were gifts and of no cost to the OP.

To the OP, would you please post a picture of your '15-S Buff?

It's kinda hard to see the date in the. It's faded but definitely a 1915s.

No need to hose yourself, there are plenty of others willing to do it to you.If you have any real good stuff(condition-years) try HA.com to reaize the most $ per piece......

Sorry for the third degree, I understand now. I guess I shouldn't try to read and post while fixing broken computers.

I like the 15 S Buffalo.

You should -easily- be able to get more silver with proof ASEs because they do have numismatic value above melt. The real value depends on the year though. I think you might have found a decent "buy" LCS where you can buy stuff for cheap then flip it on eBay for a quick 5% profit.

You would have much better luck at a coin show or a coin club meeting. At Coin shows, the tableholder has much lower overhead... Easy to give you $45 in trade for a $55 coin. That would allow you to increase your weight in Silver.

That's a good idea. I will have to look online for the next coin show in the area. I just missed one a few weeks ago.

Thanks

I've gone to a LCS and asked for ASEs to buy. For normal coins they wanted $40 apiece. I called around and found a LCS in town that had ASEs for only 34.50. Even with the mileage and time it was worth the time to buy a couple of those. If I ever had the fund to order more, I definitely would go to that store again unless providant metals had a better price. I would keep those beauties, COA and all. Worse comes to worse I would go to a coin shop,or a pawn shop. If Ebay and paypal didn't bleed us all dry I would suggest that. I would probably suggest craigslist and say they are kept in a saftey deposit box at such and such bank. I know some banks near me will rent out boxes for a month at a time.

Hugs,
Garoulady

It always depends on how much the seller has in it.

If a dealer for a monster box mint direct at $2 over spot, or can replace inventory at a low price, you can get a deal.

Walk into your LCS today and ask for a 2013 Eagle at spot and you will get laughed out the door.
