Well I have not been doing this for a year yet (feb) but I keep getting to the right spots. This was found in a farmers field quite close to my home. Was digging very little, maybe a can or two when this fine coin popped out of a hole. I believe it is 1864 (my oldest coint to date) but don't want to rub it to find out. I have it soaking in some distilled water now (is that ok?)

Wow do I love my new addiction. :)

Thanks for looking and Merry Christmas

BDD...Kirk

doh... wouldnt that be a no-no.

Are these ok to put in peroxide, I love what it does for my injuns and wheaties.

Very nice find. Isn't it great when you take that big leap into the past! That's what is so great about this hobby. You should soak that 2-center in olive oil for a few days to hopefully loosen up the encrusted dirt. Good luck.
Bob

Nice coin.I found one this summer. All my treasure will have to age for another year as it is under a foot of snow here.HH,Jim

awesome find !!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D i agree with the long ovile oil soak..
waiting ain't fun, but it's prob the best thing for a 2 cent piece....

Looks like a real nice 2 center from the few details I can see.

Wash it with soap and water and leave it at that.

Olive oil soaking will leech out of your coins for years. I have a couple of coins I put in olive oil a few years back and they still leech out in the holders.

Good work Ken

Put it in some good soapy water , let soak a bit and clean it off with a toothbrush. Nice find!

I'll bet it's a even more beautiful coin without the dirt.
Post a update with a cleaned up photo if you do clean it, PLEASE.

Nice coin, congrats.

thats going to be a very nice coin once you get it cleaned up, big congrats to you ;)

Congrats!!!! You are doing quite well for yourself. No doubt it's a keeper, it should clean up nicely. Gotta love this hobby.

Thats gonna clean up really nice, I hope to see it cleaned soon. Great find

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I think I'll give it a while in the soapy water soak and see how it turns out before or if I try anything else.

Ill post some pics when its finished.

Congrats, nice find! I'd love to find one of those one of these days. BTW, if I'm not mistaken, the older wheats and the indian heads have the same composition as the 2 cent coin (a type of bronze). Therefore, I bet it would turn out really nice if you tried some peroxide/ammonia, cause yea, I agree, that stuff can clean up the IHs and wheats real nice. All up to you of course...congrats again and good luck getting more stuff from that field!

So just had to try some HP on this. Pleased with the results, it removed all the dirt and left the patina intact, although alot of corrosion was revealed. Think I'm finished cleaning it at this point as I'm happy with the patina and the amount of detail that can be seen.

Now just can't wait to get back out there... come on saturday hurry up and get here :)
