Well I have not been doing this for a year yet (feb) but I keep getting to the right spots. This was found in a farmers field quite close to my home. Was digging very little, maybe a can or two when this fine coin popped out of a hole. I believe it is 1864 (my oldest coint to date) but don't want to rub it to find out. I have it soaking in some distilled water now (is that ok?)

Wow do I love my new addiction. :)

Thanks for looking and Merry Christmas

That's a REALLY good looking coin. Great Find!
I wouldn't do too much more to it now.
Congrats!

Very nice, can't really get it any better than that! Congrats again, HH

OH YEAH ~ that's a sweet find there! WOOHOO!!!!

That's one on my "wish list" still. Hopefully I'll find one in 2008.

Take care!
Neil

Thats a fun coin to pull out of the ground!! I have dug three now in the past three years.
The last one I dug up was the best yet. Yours cleaned up pretty nice!! I dont think you can do much better on the cleaning without possibly losing something. 8) 8)

Thanks for all the replies.

Yeah I'm pretty happy with how it is now so I'm finished cleaning it. I'd hate to lose any of the nice deep green patina.

I stopped by on the way home today as I saw the land owner was out and about. He had asked me to show him anything I found. I was a bit hesitant as he said he had a MD back home, but from the sound of it had not used it for quite sometime. I thought he would say "hey, nice coin there. Now don't come back I want to hit it". But I stopped anyhow and he was delighted that I had found something (and I can still go back :) )

If you want to get the dirt off get a toothpick and run the coin under water and then start gently taking the dirt off with the tooth pick. Also WTG!

Your 2 cent piece has some awesome detail! The couple that I have don't look near as good as that one.

Great coin.
Hope you get to go again Saturday.
Merry Christmas.

EXCELLENT find and EXCELLENT cleaning methods. I've found that the peroxide method seems to work quite well for those that have a green patina. Nice job with the cleaning--that 2c piece is as good of an example as one could hope to find. Congrats!

VERY Nice find!!!

I've only found two of these puppies and I've been swinging a coil since 1982.

WTG!

Great '64 2-Center! I found one last year, and it was the best coin of my 1st season.

It cleaned up nicely. All I've done with my coppers and 'bronzes' was dish soap & a soft toothbrush and then olive oil.

Next season's old ones will get HP first.

Nice Find!! I've only found two in 35 years of teckin!

Great coin, and I'm glad the HP worked. That would've been my guess too. I also use an ultrasonic when I'm dealing with dirt rather than corrosion. It removes soil without causing abrasion. The downside is if the coin's surface is flaking off I find the ultrasonic will make it worse, but taking all of that off too.

Cheers and HH,
Bman
