Got off work early today and didn't have time to look for new sites, so I went to one that I've been trying to find for a while now but couldn't pinpoint the house until today! This place is actually my great, great, great, great, great grandfathers homestead. I dug what looked to be a coin ,a couple of buttons and a cufflink. When I pulled the button out of the cornfield I thought that it is pretty big, still had dirt clumped to it. I got home washed the mud off still didn't see anything, so I put a little soap on it and gently rubbed between my finger and thumb,as soon as I saw the eagle I stopped cleaning ! I was wondering what to do for bringing out more detail without damaging it any further. Sorry that is all the better the picture is, but was afraid to clean it any more. It however was hit by a plow. It says on it "March the fourth 1789 memorable era."

Re: G.W. Button

Yours is the brass example.....Cobb 4...or Alberts WI-1. Common. It actually looks like there is plenty of detail left. I would take some heated peroxide and dip a Q-Tip in it, and lightly brush the crud off. I'm sure you will see plenty of detail come out from under. After you're satisfied with what you see, soak it in olive oil for a few weeks. It will make a nice display. Post the pics after you are done. Can't believe there is so little interest in this find.

Re: G.W. Button

congrats on an amazing buton! my 2nd G.W. was that variety and i was deathly afraid to clean it. but considering that the letttering is incused (which mean sunk in instead of raised) i was advised to do the hot peroxide method.which i'm glad i did.it released all the crud packed into the recessed lettering and came out much better than the way i was gonna leave it. i used a soft toothbrush dipping it in the hot peroxide gently scrubbing after it sat submersed in bubbling peroxide for one minute. take a look at the before and after pics on my thread below

let us know if ya do it and take pics.ya won't hurt it doing it this way.it's gonna improve it drastically watch! it says "march the 4th 1789 memorable era"
good luck!
I VOTE BANNER!

I thought the one that I found is copper. I read somewhere they made it from copper, brass and sheffield. What is sheffield? I'd like to thank everybody for their input!!!

Re: G.W. Button

I have had nothing to complain about this year,,,,, But Damn My eyes are green  FANTASTIC FIND :notworthy:

Re: G.W. Button

I tell ya, that is a nice find. In fact it really needs to be up top. I am voting Banner for a relic that is just flat out one of the coolest things that any hunter would like to find. Especially when our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, fathers, mothers etc are still fighting for or freedoms. Nothing like seeing our beloved eagle up top on the Banner. So I hope it makes it there. Congrats on a great find. jgas

In 2003 there were only 2 known copper examples. You would have to clean it up to know for sure I think. We also would like to see a pic of the back. Does it still have the shank? I think you may find it is the brass example. :dontknow:

Re: G.W. Button

Beautiful Button!!!!.........

Re: G.W. Button

Wow, :o

Great find, I voted Banner !! :icon_thumleft: :headbang:

Keep @ It and HH !! ;D :D

Re: G.W. Button

The shank is missing. I decided to clean it and put a thin film of olive oil on it,but then washed it off with warm soapy water. I am now going to leave it alone Iron Patch. When the wife and I get a better camera I will update a picture of it. Thanks for the BANNER votes and comments.

GREAT SUPER find   :thumbsup:Breezie

Looks good. Obviously that was corrosion, and not wear... was hard to tell in the picture but it came out well.
