Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I know that this is a metal detecting site, and the item that I am showing WAS found with a metal detector, but it just wasn't me. Went to a garage sale last weekend, and while looking thru a misc. box of items, I found the pictured button. Was advised that it had been found by her husband on one of his detecting trips when living back east. He no longer MDed, and he didn't want the pin, and I could have it if I wanted it. Guess what? I wanted it. Hope you enjoy. We just don't find this type on item out here.

Your pic of the back is not very clear, but from what I can see it does not look quite right. I hope for you that it is real, but I have some doubts. Unfortunately there are lots of reproductions and outright fakes out there.

I'll take a couple of more pictures of the back and post them. The back is NOT a sold piece. It looks like to individual pieces come up, and are bent inward. They almost touch, but not quite. From the pictures that I have seen on line, of the real ones, this one matches those to a tee. Front and back. I am out of town until tommorow night, but when I get back I'll redo the pictures of the back and it should give you a better look.

Either way, real or fake, it was a free bee, so I'm not out one way or the other. Will still check with the experts, and let everyone know of those results.

Thanks for your info.

That is a repo I have two of the real ones on the back should have superior quality and the eye should not be solid like yours.

The picture is not the best, and I will post a better one tommorow evening. The back comes up as one piece, and then splits into two bands. These bands are then curled over to make a hole for sewing the button to a fabric. The two curls come very close together, but do not touch each other. I have never seen this type of "eye" on a button before. I know that this doesn't really make much sense, but I don't know how to explain it further.

Thanks for your input.

Here is a couple of more pictures of the reverse of the button. These photos are a heap bit better than that first one was. I haven't heard back from the ones who know yet, but when I do, I'll let everyone know.
Hope these photos help.

Now to be FAIR, they did make one piece "CSA" buttons...Not all of them were two piece buttons. In fact, included are pictures of a REAL "CSA" one piece button for sale on The Relic Mans website and the shank is VERY similar. And to be honest, I have seen shanks like these before as well.

Well, I heard back from John Rierson, a dealer in Civil War buttons, and he advised that from the pictures, it was hard to tell, but if it was a real button that the edge of the pin should show lathe marks. But, not always. So, I guess that I will just put this in my collection and mark it as questionable at this time. The next time that I travel east or southeast, I'll take it with me and have it examined by someone who sees this type item much oftener than we do out here in the middle west. Thanks to all who had put input into this matter, I really appreciated it.

As always, HH
Larry
