Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
As I have seen many new members asking about a good starter detector, and many members on here commenting about there Ace 250, I have finally seen one up close and personal, I have to add my two cents. So I am detecting a guys yard when his neighbor comes over and introduces himself and watches me detect for awhile. He then says that he has a detector and invited me to come to his yard that he has hunted to death, he claimed. I went to his yard and started looking around with my V3i, he returns with the trusty 250 in hand. First impression was that it looked cheap, I mean toyish cheap. Then as I am looking he states that all he ever found was beer tabs. I found 10 coins in about 20 minutes, while he found nothing. He got so discouraged that he told me to keep on looking, but he knew he wasn't even in my class. He stayed and watched for a little longer then went back in the house. He even got me permission to hunt his mothers yard next door.

As far as what I could see, he couldn't make heads or tells out of the random bell tones that he was hearing. If I found a signal that I thought was a coin, I would call him over and let him scan it before I dug it. Only about 4 out of ten did he even get a response. Vice versa all of the signals he found, mine showed them as trash or were completely discrimed out as iron. That detector was annoying as hell to listen to. I wouldn't give $50 bucks for one of those much less $250. If you are over the age of 12 you will be doing yourself a disservice buying a 250. Mind you I am not bashing them just to be, I really respect Garrett as a brand, but don't fall for this trap. And if that's all that you can afford get a cheap Tesoro or Whites. Or better yet save your money another year and get a $500 plus machine. If I had started with one of these I can promise you that I would not be detecting today. You get what you pay for.

Ps- I love my Garrett Pro Pointer! Not brand bashing.\
Pss- I found 3 quarters, 3 dimes, 5 wheat, and 9 copper/zincs. Have not got to the backyard yet.

But u did.this whole topic has gotten way out of control for no reason ya there is no point in bashin any detector nothing no 50,000 machine or a $50 is gonna find anything if its not there & ya ur pissed there some knockin the 250 but think about ur posts how better r u. Now ur knockin everything ctx v3i etc cuz the adjusting is stupid right, arent u doin the same thing by knockin those because u have ur theory on they r just useless bella & whistles cuz im sorry there not. Let me ask u something u driving a car from.the 70's 80's? Bet u got a newer something since u started driving y bells & whistles cuz that old car or truck.still got u where u were goin u just thought it was time for an upgrade thats all. We should b all talking about our finds or places instead its a bunch of grown people arguing like kids on a play ground
... Well christo000.. You have a good day and HH........

Electroscope by Thomas

You guys never heard of the Electroscope by Thomas? I'm amazed!
It's one of those hand held detectors that can pick up gold and silver from a mile away!!!!!
It has an antenna on the end of it.....google it and you will see the marvel of metal detecting.
They aren't cheap either.
All joking aside....many people do not believe that those machines actually work at all. I bought one back in the eighties....and I know for a fact that they do work.
My step-dad got me into metal detecting when I was a teenager. We hunted the battlefields of Franklin,Tn. Him and his MD buddy both laughed at me when I told them I had purchased the Electroscope. I asked my stepdad to bury some silver dollars in his yard and I would find them for him. He did....and I found all three locations within 15 minutes.
His MDing buddy said he had something buried in his back yard and wanted me to come over and see if I could locate it. I found his treasure chest in less than 5 minutes.
I don't know what makes the machine work...a lot of people say it's like having a dowsing rod.....I just know from experience that it would locate gold and silver from great distances. When I first got it...I asked my 2 kids to hide my wedding band in their room and I would look for it. I stood at the doorway and swept the room with the scope. It locked on to my daughters playhouse kitchen set. They had put my ring inside the oven of the plastic playhouse.
So there you have it.....the Electroscope explained.8-)

I be Damn! So I would wonder why more people don't have one or even have heard of it.

People are a mystery huh...
Someone on the news channel says ... this or that candidate is the right choice for the job. Many people hear them say that and bingo...you have elected an idiot into office based on what the media said. Not based on your research and knowledge of the person being elected. Many people make decisions this way. Me...I would rather do some research and find out the truth for myself. That's just me tho...
People have their ways of doing things....that's why we have this great debate going on about these detectors. I say...you have to try one first...then make your own decision. If the hard mattress makes you sleep better....buy it.....I like something in the medium range.

^^^The best response to this^^^

Well all I can say is that if what you have stated is the truth then take yourself and the LRL to a mining company and show them how easy it is to find gold, silver diamonds, water or whatever ,then instead of defending the contraptions on this forum you could be out becoming rich and very well respected and will be achieving great things for your country and possibly all humanity.:occasion14::hello2: Also irrespective of what you Americans think of Dick Smith in Australia, his offer of a very large cash reward for being able to demonstrate that these LRLs that require phsycic power to work actually do work and that you are able to consistantly locate particular deliberately hidden items of various materials still stands. If you are serious then contact Dick and set up a test. There is big money to be had as well as fame and fortune and great respect from all humanity. Just imagine what you could do for all of the people of the world who are struggling to simply get enough water for their every day need. You could locate water, gold , diamonds etc without the need to pay vast sums of money to drilling and ore testing companies:notworthy:

I'd like to have a detector with a built in led light on the coil. And maybe a cupholder...

My grandson uses my 250 and rarely does he ever miss anything. I have followed him and only on occasion have i found something he has missed. He digs more cans and bottle caps than i do but tha is to be expected. He is 14

Either way bottle cap trash or treasure its great spending time with the kids no matter What

I myself have a garrett ace 250 and I think its pure trash myself.... I am selling it to buy a fisher f2 or even a tesoro. About 5+ times today when I was detecting a find would first ring in as a .10 or .25, once I would start digging it would then become a foil/pop tab signal. And after that it was correct but whats the point if you have to waste time digging for a "coin" if it turns into a foil/pop tab.......

I have used this thing for an easy 75+ hours and thought it was decent at the beginning but I am finding it to have a lot of ghost signals and false readings

I'm surprised that no one defending the ACE x50 jumped on this post. I'll give you $100 for it.

I spent a couple of days MDing with my father recently, and his 'guest' machine is a 250. Once I started learning how to use the machine, it started yielding better results. I didn't cover as much ground as he did with his Sovereign GT equipped with a SEF 10x12 coil, but I did learn to weed out the trash from the treasure in fairly short order. Nothing fancy, like a walking liberty or a gold ring, but I found plenty of clad. (and pull tabs, and bottle tops, and keys, and...) ;)

From what I have been told on here it seems it would be better to not detect with your grandson than put a 250 in his hands......................

If ya look I liked his post, and was being VERY VERY sarcastic. There have been many comments on here that somone would rather be run over by a herd of elephants wearing soccer cleats, or not metal detect, ANYTHING other than using or having someone use, B.S. along that line rather than use a 250 and get out and enjoy the outdoors, friendships, family, just doing something.

Well mayb I read it to fast I just didnt c the sarcazim latley its been pretty hard to tell here either way Hh everyone

I am only 30, no kids yet but they are on the way soon I hope. Cant wait to take them fishing, hunting, MDing, ect.

I was down a local base ball field the other day when Tball started and a bunch of the brothers and sisters of the players ran over to see what I was doing. I ended up handing my 250, pro pointer, and digger over and letting them have a blast with it... might be the funnest MDing day I had, just kind of hung out and tried to teach them what they would learn at ages from about 5-10. They found a ton of clad, tabs, and bottle caps, and I should have charged the parents for babysitting LOL. They had a blast.

Garrett is currently developing a new model with a built-in sarcasm meter.

Sweet! If I had one it would be pegged all the time!

I went to help my mom set up her Ace 250 today. She really enjoys detecting but she just plain sucks at it. There really is no nice way to describe her detecting capabilities.
She's been playing with it since last fall and she doesn't get it. She doesn't take the time to learn, just swing swing swing! Chases ghost signals all over creation, dug holes look like the surface of the moon even after the "plugs" have be put back. She just detects ugly. Period!
I made a trip down to see her and try and help her out again. When I got there she was out in her yard with her detector bing bonging constantly. She was quite frustrated that she couldn't get her detector to settle down and said "it just keeps beeping all the time".
I suspected the sens was too high as she was quite close to some overhead power lines. The first thing I did was explain to her what I suspected the issue was and the changes I was making to the Ace250. I turned the sens down a couple of notches and all was good.
I then changed her mode from factory coins to a custom one that I made for her. It's almost the same as coins except I set the sens 3 from max & took out the dollar notch. This should keep the big iron and other phantom signals to a minimum. As I was testing out this magic setup for her I got a pretty signal indicating penny or dime @ 6". I called her over & we dug it up...57 Rosie at every bit of six inches! Score!
Anyway she hunted with it a little before she had to leave and it seemed to work much better for her. I also tried helping her with her lack of pinponiting skills. While she was getting better as I watched and tutored, we'll see if it takes!

Not really defending the Ace 250 because you couldn't give me one. I think the machine sucks and I absolutely hate it. But it can be made to work. But it kinda fits into the "even blind squirrels find nuts sometimes".
