Detector(s) used
Garrett GTI 2000, Garrett Ace 400, Garrett AT Max and Minelab Xterra Pro. Two Garrett Carrots
Just received a pair with my new AT Max and it only has sound on one side. Is this the way they are supposed to be?

They are brand new. I thought there was something wrong. I bought a pr. of MS2 headphones as well and they sound like the speakers are blown. I purchased it all from Garrett Direct and I'm extremely disappointed in them. Not too happy with the AT Max either. It's useless in the city, non stop power line and other interference. Everything non stop iron sound everywhere I try it. The few coins I've found were iron sounding.

I thought they had the problems with the Max fixed. Maybe not.

I just have to ask! Why the AT Max? For a bit more, you could have purchased a Vortex VX-9. Yes, you would have had to spend another $100 or so to get the headset. The reason I ask, the AT Max is a single-frequency, analog detectorThe VX-9 is a digital, multi-frequency unit. I like mine, now that a few inaccuracies in the manual have been corrected. If I had to do it all over again, I would have specified the Viper coil rather than the standard one.

I didn't know much about the Vortex and I'm kinda leery of new models and their problems. Although I think the Vortex looks like a Whites and why shouldn't it be, Garrett owns them. I got an incredible deal on the AT Max and it came with the MS3 wireless headphones. With the deal I got I was able to get a new Z lynk carrot all for slightly over five C notes. Plus I got a Garrett hat and camo digger pouch plus a finds box. Not to mention the duck call. What would I do without that. For that price I also got two pair of gloves and the MS2 headphones. I couldn't pass it up.

Just a bit more for the record. There are (I hope soon were!) omissions in the Vortex manual. Shall I say, whoever penned it was a bit too terse. Especially so for an online document with virtually zero printing costs! The major one concerns the reset scenario. The unit must be reset from an 'on' condition. You still get the double beep if you do it from off condition, but no reset occurs. The pinpoint is tricky to use until you figure it out. A more detailed explanation is in order too. Lastly, as I understand it, the Vortex series is the first all-digital unit from Garrett. Perhaps that is part of the issue—they're learning too!

Garrett's sending me a new pr. of MS3 headphones, they mailed yesterday. The quality of their Equipment doesn't seem to be as good as it used to be, and sadly this isn't the first time I've had to send stuff back to Garrett's and have it replaced.

Remember, Garrett doesn't make the headsets, rather they're private-labeled devices. Baby failures just happen!

Don't forget the owner's manual is made in USA, what would we do without that.. I wish the AT Max manual was made like the older manuals that would fit in your front shirt pockets. You could always have the instructions with you. Garrett has received my MS3 phones, but it turns out they still haven't even started to send my replacement ones. They say they might mail them tomorrow. they sure can waste your time.
