Gilmore's 21 Half Dollar Boxes - RESULTS - Box #10 Dream Box....

Here are results from my 21 boxes of Halves since last Thursday, Sept 29th.

A great start to the month. Box #10 was a dream box.

Box 1: Skunk
Box 2: Skunk

Box 6: Skunk
Box 7: Skunk
Box 8: Skunk
Box 9: Skunk
Box 10: 1-40% with a hole drilled in it
Box 11: Skunk
Box 12: Skunk
Box 13: Skunk
Box 14: Skunk
Box 15: Skunk
Box 16: Skunk
Box 17: Skunk
Box 18: Skunk
Box 19: Skunk
Box 20: Skunk
Box 21: Skunk

Dont feel the need to write about how depressing it is. These boxes were from Chase and BofA, over a span of 9 locations, 8 days. Ordering boxes are a sure way to hit loads of silver. What now

To add injury to insult, the only 40% had a drilled hole in it.

You know, it might not be a COINcidence that the only Ag that you found was adulterated.

I know it has been suggested and debunked so many times, but IF the coin service DID cull silver by an automated (Ryedale-Like) process, the only silver that would escape detection would be non-matching. A holed coin could cause that non-matching condition.

When I sort cents with the electo-mechanical comparator and use a Zinc cent as the reference coin, severely corroded zinc cents are rejected as no-match. I'm going to drill a hole in an otherwise pristine zinc cent and see if that gets rejected. I'll let you know the results.

I know their not as valuable, and your not going to hit big often but try doing some nickels man. I usually average 2+ war nickels per box at chase branches all over the valley.

The infamous "Arizona Dream Box" appears again. Reading the thread title, I first thought you had proven yourself wrong. I'm never going to complain about bad luck in Utah again as my highest skunk streak was 8.

A little low for my average. Remember - on boxes I get one silver for a little under every ten boxes I search. So to be average you should have found TWO silvers in that load, not one.

That's the reality of silver in Phoenix. Partly because we are so new in populaton here, and partly becaues the PLANT here is so new. They have better machines that kick out the junk and don't let all those mexican coins and such get into our rolls. that also means it kicks out the silver. Not designed FOR silver, but they know it GETS silver, and I'm sure that is just a smile for them as they count it.

Just the luck of our area.

Keep on searching loose rolls. They still produce here in Phoenix (And confirm that the machine takes what goes in. You can't see all that silver in teller trays that we get and not know that a lot does NOT get gotten by us while in the trays. It goes back, and yet ... it never gets out in new boxes. Yep, the discriminator that they have kicks out the silver here. Back east they have an older machine, and they won't retool it for a newer one until they need to when it breaks down. )

So stay on the loose rolls. Work nickels. Do pennies. Dimes are scant but produce a little, as you know. Quarters normally suck worse than halves.

That's my advise. From an oldie, but I'm not dissing the hobby. Just stating the facts that I have gleaned over the years, and using the wisdom gained to say that I don't do boxes of halves any more. Except on road trips, where I am bored and don't like nickels on the road, so I'll get four or five half boxes and work them on a trip to CA and back. But they don't get me excited, and i don't find anything, so I stop again when back home.

Keep hunting my friend. It IS out there. Not much here, but still some - and that's what we nee dto find. :-)

Thanks for the advice, and a very probable theory on newer machines becuase city is basically 15 years old. Ive been out here since 2000, and it was half the size. Who knows. Im not a fool though, so will be holding off on boxes for awhile.

Still in the process of dumping all these! Was "half" tempted to make my mark on all 21,000 of these things before releasing them back into the wild. Decided agaisnt it, as I actually do have a life.

wow, how long did it take you to go through? Bummer you didn't get more, you'll have some luck sooner or later though
