Gloomy Day Brings Shiny Ring

Really low tide this morning with calm seas. Some sun would have been nice but any time you get that clunking in the scoop is a great day. The ring had no numbers on the inside so I'm going to assume it is stainless. It weighed out at 5.67 grams it had to be for a real big guy because it slides off my finger!! It had Char and Steph forever written on the inside. Tested it for silver but to be honest I couldn't really tell if the liquid turned light red or brown. Haven't figured that part out yet, so I'm calling it stainless steel! It still brightened my day!

It had to have looked good in the scoop regardless of what it turns out to be. You found a ring.

Probably is stainless, but take a close look at the edges of the ring. Gold is usually polished with clean/smooth flow, somewhat rounded edges, whereas most mass-market stainless rings are machine and stone cut and the edges will be much sharper/faster. My eyes aren't that great anymore so instead of looking for those tiny marks on the inside of the ring I've come to look at the edges of the ring first. Once you compare the differences it becomes pretty obvious to the naked eye, even mine. I found a 10k white gold band a while back that honestly looked and felt like stainless but when I glanced at the edges of the ring they were nice a well formed, very smooth. When I got back to the truck and used the loop I saw the 10k stamped on the inside of the ring.

Easiest silver test is 18k gold acid. If it turns creamy blue your good. I threw my silver acid out. Came straight from a big time buyer in my area.

Yep, I second Buzzhead's post...... 18k acid turns a milky white with an electric blue tint way easier than trying to figure out the colors on the silver test acid......

..One sure thing for silver is, it should clean up very shiney and leave the tarnish on the cloth...But Silver or Stainless...its an awesome find!

It won't turn any color, just fade to whatever your stone is.

You probably already know but some foreign jewelry will not have a stamp sometimes as I've found a 14k toe ring that was not stamped and had it tested and confirmed by the jewelry store that I sell scrap to. Gold toe ring was a first! Also found a beefy wedding band that was marked 950 but not platinum. It turned out to be Mexican silver. Tested jewelry with a acid kit and worked great at first then couldn't tell if silver acid was turning red anymore either. Noticed under a light it looked kind of yellow. Retested it on some silver I've tested before and then learned that the acids expire after a little while. If your acid is not fresh then your possible real finds will test negative.
