My friend (and mentor, Jerry has been MD'in' since the 70's) and I were working a vacant lot yesterday when a car drives by with the driver giving us 'the eye'. I tell Jerry 'we've got company' as the car pulls into the alley and stops. We figure it's the owner come to give us the ole heave ho but, the guy walks up and after the prerequisite niceties (findin' anything?) says he'll give us $50 to find a gold bracelet he lost while planting banana trees. We tell him we'll do it for free and follow him to his house (a big brick, 3400 sq ft built in the 20's with a matching child's play house) to look for the bracelet. Takes Jerry about 5 min with his Fisher 552 (best machine I have ever seen in action and it's 20+ years old), this bracelet came out of the ground and it looked like a dogs choker chain! The guy insisted on givin' us the $50 so we graciously accepted (it was a $3000 bracelet!) and hunted the lot next door where the old house had been torn down. Found a few wheaties and lots of clad as well as a praying hands medallion. The funny part is the guy asked if we had a card, in case he or his friends ever needed our services! LOL my better half had suggested I print some up to give people that approached us just a week earlier, this had been prompted after a surveyor had talked to us in downtown St Pete expressing interest in MD'ing and telling us about all of the old places he often surveyed. I hadn't followed her sage advice but I will now as this could lead to a good amount of places to hunt. A lesson here in the importance of networking and leads garnered just from being friendly and personable with people you meet while detecting. I read a lot of 'horror' stories in these forums and I realize that there are people out there that would try and take your finds but, most people just have a curiosity about finding things. The PR of simple friendliness with them (we are all curious about finding 'lost treasure' or we wouldn't do this) is invaluable to our hobby and a great resource to us individually. Thanks for reading and Good Hunting!
