Several years ago, I was at a local coin shop and a lady walked in with a coin she wanted to find out about and sell. It was a British half sovereign. She said she got it in change at a NYS toll booth in Buffalo as a nickel. So it can happen!

Back in the early 90's, on a coin collecting bulletin board (remember those?), a guy wrote that he got a roll of halves from his bank and in place of one of the halves was a St. Gaudens $20.
