Bought this coin at an auction about 3 hours ago.

Any ideas on it?
Is it real gold?

Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. Whoever mentioned "due diligents" provided good advice for all of us! Good luck!

Are the other "coins" authentic? If so, I would say that was a pretty good deal (unless the P & H was something outrageous).

Yes all are authentic. Not sure what P & H means? :tongue3:

I agree that using "due dilligence" is our respsponsibility, but PLEASE don't ever use that phrase again or I am going to have to NEVER come to the forums again. I have the absolute worst boss ever and she uses that phrase daily! I have come to hate it. Even though, I love all of you.

I believe none of the California gold coins are actual coins in the true sense and to me should all be considered tokens. Even the genuine ones. That is if you define a coin as something made by a government mint to be used as legal tender. NONE of these were made by the US mint, even the real ones. That being said, yours is a souveneer type replica worth very little but for a buck for the lot you did fine.

Token. Why do I say so?
I've owned several like this. The gilt looks like it is starting to wear through - I can see grey/silver on the rims. The strike details are all very rounded and not sharp. The wear marks are not sharp, but rounded. All the details have the look of a cast copy rather than something die struck. The plain fields are not smooth but stippled in appearance. The genuine coin is highly detailed and has a 5 in the shield on the eagle's breast. I could go on, these two are definitely NOT identical at all.

I can tell the difference with this comparison. Thanks.

I only paid $1 for a lot of coins in which this "token" was included.
Others in the lot were,
1964 Quarter- Proof
1920-D Counter Stamped Buffalo Nickel
1928 Canada Dollar Proof
7 1919 Wheat Pennies
1942 Nickel
1965 Churchill Coin
1943 Wheat
1998 Bahamas Coin

So I got a good deal, Just thought I hit the jackpot!
forget that gold coin!!! was that 1943 wheatie a copper?!?!

Was a steel one :(

If you scroll down on the e-bay site that is selling those tokens there is a disclaimer

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE THIS TOKEN IS NOT A GOLD COIN. I HAVE NOT HAD IT TESTED FOR GOLD. IT DOES HOWEVER LOOK LIKE THE PICTURE IN THE OFFICIAL RED BOOK - A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS 2009. THIS TOKEN WILL MAKE AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTORS COLLECTION. PLEASE BID ACCORDINGLY AND GOOD LUCK.

Interesting Fake coin.... congrats !

Well might try to sell it on ebay if it brought $60. Was thinking about taking it to the local dealer, think he would offer anything?

:D Same here with 'imperative'.

Green Frost, getting all that for a buck I'd say you scored on a walk. Your grand slam will come soon enough :icon_thumleft:

the 1964 quarter was worth the $1.00, so you got a good deal. :coffee2:

I sold the coin to a gold shop for $5. After I talked to someone, and I'm guessing I should have sold it for more?

NHBandit...do I sense a dislike for California......Would'nt a minted coin be considered real an not a token. So would you sell a 1857s $10.00 gold at token value....Or would you sell it as a gold coin? JUST ASKING ??? ??? ???
