Found this nice 9k cameo ring this evening, assayed in Birmingham but cant seem to find a date letter identical to the one on the ring. It is a small 'b' in a square with cut corners. I have included a picture of a drawing I did of the date letter as my camera wont focus in on the hallmark.
Thanks in advance.

Hard to tell from your picture if it's a 1901 or 2001 date letter, but from your description of the "...a square with cut corners..." I would agree with 2001.

Does one of the other stamps inside say 575, if so it's 14KT.

No it says 375 with another stamp '9'.
Don't think its 2001, yes its in a square with cut corners, but the style of the letter b is more like the 1901 style than the 2001 style

Hi SS, just looking at the Birmingham Assay office web site and it says: 'The same letters were used for Gold, which has been marked in Birmingham since 1824, but with a background of a square with cut corners'.
The 1901-style letter b matches mine, its just the shape its in that is different...they basically say that the letters are the same but the background is a square with cut corners, like mine.
Hope you understand me lol

Am I the only one thinking it is neither 2001 or 1901?
Why would the goldsmith put the "b" upside down?
If the information about the square background with cut corners is correct, this ring was made in 1915. The date-letter-mark is a "q", NOT a "b". :icon_thumright:

upside down?

If collectorconor can post a photo of the makersmark, we can solve this easy.
I see the updated picture now, I never seen it before my last post. and it is a q, pitty he didn't do it earlier, would saved a great deal of time...

Also on another part of the ring it says .375 and a 9 as well as on the main hallmark
