The picture doesn't look gold but the 1972 looks to be gold plated and has a proof-like finish...Has date stamps of 1960 and 1980 that look to be added after minting...saw some commemoratives on e-bay that were similar...Any ideas? These were all I found out of $1000 in halves I ordered. Probably will stick to buying what ever the small banks have around here as I have done better that way....

That's some kind of aftermarket addition making it a novelty, much like the Kennedy head added to Lincoln cents after Kennedy's assacination. Lots of places gold plate coins for collectors that don't know better. Check out all the gold plated State Quarters out there. And the "colored" coins (painted bright colors).

It's still worth 50? (unless someone is willing to pay more).

I think it's still a very cool find, even if it isn't worth a lot. I like different or unusal coins, and hey it only cost you .50 cents. Congratulations.

I've never saw one with the 1960 and 1980 on either side.I have one from 1977 which is gold electoplated. It was put out by the American mint.Nothing special, just some companies novel idea to make money on clad coins.
