Returned from a 10 mile hike along rugged terrain. 60 lb pack and wading across islands. I explored the island just east of Herzog island in Carderock MD. A massive island with only small signs of human activity. I found large bones, snakes, turkey and plenty of spiders. No gold though :/. I was using a metal detector to search along the quartz veins on the island. I also did a decent amount of quartz crushing along some of the larger quartz veins. The detector showed no sign of metallic substance in the veins. I did this process for about 2 miles, searching all of the quartz with my eyes and the detector. I did find one quartz area with some silver alloy sheet. Much the same look as the one I found the day previous, In a location 2 miles east, at Carderock.

GranjaDeOro,
Sounds like an interesting outing! Would be great to see some pictures of your tirip. 10 miles with a 60 lb pack, sounds familiar, good for you! And then "wading across Islands" really perks up my interest, really would like to see some pictures of your trip...................................63bkpkr

Also, welcome to Tnet!! I used to live in Blacksburg Virginia a lifetime ago.

Very interesting and located just across the river in Maryland. I have previously read about individuals prospecting the Potomac for gold and in some instances silver. Very cool and you had a great day for your adventure. Thanks for sharing... Garth.

Be careful around the Potomac. Md owns the river all the way up to the normal high water mark in Virginia. No dredging period in MD. The C and O canal runs the length of the Potomac from Cumberland to DC and is Federally protected. Stick to the tributaries in Virginia leading into the Potomac. Many good pans to you.
