Gold prospecting in South Carolina

Hey fellow prospectors and treasure hunters. I started this thread to see what people had to say about gold still in South Carolina. I aq'uired a small tract of land in Smyrna, York County. Land has been untouched since the California rush (except the little old lady that lived there since 1912). Basically I'm wondering has anyone ever picked up a nug in SC. I understand that it would be rare and would be quartz, not like a nug found in the west. If anyone knows of the Dixon Mine, Martin Mine, Horn Mine, or Southern Gold Mine which all closed in 1939 I think by Roosevelt because of the war. I'm near there. They were pulling some good size nugs from the myths. So let me know of your stories of gold found in SC.

Using a White's GMT. So far about 20 hrs. prospecting. Digging everything under 85% iron somtimes I dig targets anyway off of fence lines. Slow going lots of nails and .22 cal. bullets in rocky soil. Found a few buttons with no markings and some worn down axe heads about 14" down under large roots. Makes you wonder what happened to make someone be so careless with such a valuable asset of the time. I'm going to search it all of course, consentrating on the tickest areas of the forest first since the leaves are down and try to hit as many ridges and hillsides before summer slows things even worse. I'm detecting the area first then I'll dig some prostpecting pits. What gold have you guys seen in SC?

I dislike banning !! Its unconstitutional in my opinion. I

When members refuse to follow rules it happens, foothills is on a temporary ban...

Hey I am in South Carolina. I was wondering is there anyone nearby who has melted iron/gold mixed? I have filtered the material I have down to 50 and 30- mesh and was wondering, since I see very little rock in the 30 mesh, could it be melted washed down with the iron like it is? And I guess what would be the best way to get this melted after I have worked it down? Thank you!!

Mine is just gold. The iron is separate.

The very top is 50mesh, bottom 30 mesh, and the center picture is the smallest stuff imaginable. 1gram on the center pic...Any thoughts? The pictures do not really do them justice

Was up around 40 acre Rock last year and just found some creek running under the road in that area. Spent the whole day there and came away with some fine flour type gold ...not much to brag about...just saying though if you are in that basic area and see a creek anywhere just get your pan and see what you might find, there is definitely gold there!

My thoughts are "you should pan it".

Hey all I'm new here but have been panning for a couple years. I'm in Newberry SC. I live right next to a creek that runs out to lake Murray. I have found some gold very small flakes, but recently started checking a creek on our hunting property in Fairfield county. I was there today and only had time to get a few shovel fulls from different spots. Got home and panned first one and nothing second 2 small flakes. Final pan had a nice flake with 3-4 very small flakes. The creek I'm working in has two consecutive small water falls about 25 feet apart over what I think is solid quarts sticking out of the bed of the creek. Looks like what I think would bare some good gold. I'm wondering where is the best spot to look for the most concentrated area. image.jpg

Just thought I would offer a suggestion to you guys. It seems you have a lot of fine gold out there and hard to justify the expense of a dredge. That fine stuff is hard to get out of the creek by just digging. Somebody else mentioned a hand dredge on here a few pages back and I suggest the same. However I suggest a hand dredge with a one way valve that can attach to a bucket or a sluice by a hose. You can see the concept if you search for a unit called I believe a "gold and sand". Pretty easy to make one actually and the valves are available at most Ace Hardware stores or some place similar. It allows you to just pump away, not pump and dump......sorry no better way to say that. They work very well and might improve your recovery from those bedrock crevices. Dennis

Yes you are right here is a suction dredge I have been working on. I am also going to make it as a high banker also because the gold is in the clay layer here down to bedrock. So plan is to clear the clay first using high banker the use suction dredge to clean the bedrock.

update for today. It was kind of a bummer I didn't find very much there today. I did find very thick almost a silver blue clay that had a lot of black sand in it. I know there are some post about it. When I panned it I thought I would find something with the amount of black sand that washed out of it, but none found. The place I found some flakes was in the bank about 4-6 inches above the water line where I spotted small to medium size quarts line in the bank. One other spot I came across was a sand almost like beach sand on the bank and dug about a 8-10 inches down then the silver-blue clay again and under that was what looked like small bed rock and found a few flakes in that. Also one one of the water falls the whole top layer was this tan material that had a lot of black veins running through it. What is that. Here are a couple pics from today. Any suggestions? image.jpg image.jpg

Do not forget that once you get down to bedrock you want to break up every little crack and crevice and suck them out as well. Good luck to all the SC folks!
