Got back out with Sanddigger at the site where I previously dug a variety of early coins as well as the pre-CW flask I posted recently. As I've alluded to before, this is an extremely difficult yard to hunt due to lots of surface trash and iron, major electrical interference, thick weeds, and a solid layer of oyster shells starting at about the 4-6" level that covers most of the huntable area. We spent over 4 hours there today trying to pull a few keepers out of this very difficult environment. I dug a ton of deep trash, and any of those signals could have been a nice coin or other relic. But it was not to be. That is except for just one surprising find. I was quite shocked when I saw what appeared to be a heavily gilted 2-piece button gleaming from the black dirt, but I didn't immediately recognize it due to all the dirt stuck to it. But a quick cleaning with my toothbrush revealed a killer early Virginia coat-sized button with a "Canfield & Brothers Baltimore" backmark. And it also had a perfectly intact shank. When I got home I identified it as Albert's VA4A, or Tice VA 206A1. I did a dry cleaning, then wiped off with a soft cloth and applied some Renaissance wax to the front. That's all I'm going to do with it. So in spite of the overall lack of good targets today I came home a very happy hunter.

Man that's an awesome button and in perfect condition to.congrats buddy

BEAUTIFUL button!

A VA has been on my list since I lived there in the 90s. Wish I knew then what I know now about relic hunting, and I'd likely have dug one while I lived there. One day. That's quite a find.

Cheers,

Buck

Bill, you are a class act. Congrats on the terrific VA button. Its amazing how one nice find can make you forget the many difficult hours digging up trash. For me, after digging through a lot of modern trash it is a great feeling to uncover that first nice colonial coin or relic that was hidden deep below. It validates all of the research and gives me great anticipation for future hunts.

Just looking at your posts makes me want to get out and find something. That button is in great condition. I like seeing the dirty pics. Keep em coming! DD.

Wow! That button is nicer than some of the reenactment stuff I've found!
