Got back out with Sanddigger at the site where I previously dug a variety of early coins as well as the pre-CW flask I posted recently. As I've alluded to before, this is an extremely difficult yard to hunt due to lots of surface trash and iron, major electrical interference, thick weeds, and a solid layer of oyster shells starting at about the 4-6" level that covers most of the huntable area. We spent over 4 hours there today trying to pull a few keepers out of this very difficult environment. I dug a ton of deep trash, and any of those signals could have been a nice coin or other relic. But it was not to be. That is except for just one surprising find. I was quite shocked when I saw what appeared to be a heavily gilted 2-piece button gleaming from the black dirt, but I didn't immediately recognize it due to all the dirt stuck to it. But a quick cleaning with my toothbrush revealed a killer early Virginia coat-sized button with a "Canfield & Brothers Baltimore" backmark. And it also had a perfectly intact shank. When I got home I identified it as Albert's VA4A, or Tice VA 206A1. I did a dry cleaning, then wiped off with a soft cloth and applied some Renaissance wax to the front. That's all I'm going to do with it. So in spite of the overall lack of good targets today I came home a very happy hunter.
