Got a couple good ones yesterday- Baby US buckle & carved acorn

It's not quite 5AM here and I'm up early ready to get out again this morning :icon_sunny: Yesterday I met up with Mr. Croft, a local high school coach. We arrived at a new spot around 2PM, close to one I was hitting last fall. We ended up staying til around 6 and both made some nice finds.

Nice button in the plug

Thanks to tomjiggy for pointing out the carved acorn in the lower right corner of this picture.. I wasn't quite sure what it was yesterday being so small :laughing7:

I've read that buckles this size are 1839 issue, can someone verify this please :read2:

There is supposed to be no such thing as a dumb question, but as I type this, I have the feeling. I'm going to ask anyway. The one bullet that you are holding in your had, that sort of has the puckered up end. Do you suppose that is the remains of the paper cartridge? It doesn't seem like it could be, but the lead preserves some small amount of wood around a bullet. I was wondering if that could be possible. Anyhow, you have some great finds, stuff I can only dream about out here on the left coast.

Congrats on the finds :headbang:

Jeff, the baby buckle was a very nice find but without a doubt finding that carved acorn is a centerpiece find! :hello2:

Awesome day of digging Jeff. The Baby U.S. Plate is a much harder plate to find than the standard U.S. plate so kudos to you buddy, and a nice field carved Acorn to go in the display's as well. The button has a very pretty patina, usually from the iron in the Red Soil, and I noticed in the photo that the soil had a ting of red to it so makes sense. Another hell of a day in Missouri. Your digging skill is shining through, and you are definitely digging alot more relics out there in Missouri than others, congratulations buddy! :occasion14:

thanks Josh, yes that button came out with an odd patina for this area.. there was one patch of real hard-packed clay on this property and it was in that stuff.. the button back in the picture was probably off the same uniform only 20 feet away under a pine tree and crumbled in my hand :-\

Those are some first-rate finds! The buckle is of course a star find, but the carved acorn is truly the find of the day. Take it from someone who has found their share of belt plates but no carved lead like that.

Excellent post.

thanks Will, I'm happy with the acorn for sure.. ive dug carved pieces but nothing other than odd shapes and a couple chess pieces

I looked at it again and it looks like lead but that is a plausible question, lets see if anyone can second your thought :help:

Re: Got a couple good ones yesterday- Baby US buckle & carved acorn

I still haven't been able to find one of those baby plates Jeff...Your doing well as usual bud

Re: Got a couple good ones yesterday- Baby US buckle & carved acorn

Great finds and I too love the patina on that button, especially with it still in the dirt :icon_thumleft:

Re: Got a couple good ones yesterday- Baby US buckle & carved acorn

From what I gather those buckles are really hard to come by. You found enough for a showdow box all in one hunt. Very nice!

Nice digs Jeff! Congrats on the plate and the acorn

Thanks Mike, certainly caught me offguard.. as many good plate signals as I've had and as many holes as I've already dug here in MO, this signal hit quite a bit lower than I expected.. it rang up as a 69-70 on the Gold Bug DP, while .69 cal bullets come in at 78-79 ???

thanks, I had to get a picture in the plug of that contrast.. I was hoping for a letter in the shield, but no complaints from me

Re: Got a couple good ones yesterday- Baby US buckle & carved acorn

That's some good stuff there Jeff. Don't see those baby buckles all that often, and that carved acorn is really cool.

Returned to the site yesterday and turned up a bunch more melted lead, couple button backs, and a brass piece I need to get ID'ed... The portion of this site we hit is about 10% of the camp, the other 90% needs to be brush-hogged (which is already on the agenda)

Re: Got a couple good ones yesterday- Baby US buckle & carved acorn

Hey Jman , Great digs on the acorn / mini carving piece .. that is incredible and the baby US buckle is an amazing find , wish I dug it . The minty eagle .. looks like it would glow at night . Killer site with more to search , ya gotta like that !!

Re: Got a couple good ones yesterday- Baby US buckle & carved acorn

Great hunt Jeff!!! I gotta agree, that to me the prize would be that eagle button with that wicked cool green patina. I've got a CS cast block I with that color, and that green color makes them pop in a display. US baby buckle is awesome too. All around outstanding hunt...looks like you're off to a great start for an outstanding Spring!
