Thank you! I thought I'd be able to find a sample somewhere on the Web that's similar, but nada...well, I found K-2 stone, but I'm pretty certain I can rule that out in this part of Texas! ;)
Quartz-rich granitoid, possibly.
So, would I normally find something like this in a polished cross-section, like a countertop? And if I wanted to polish it (given its size), are there people who do that? Thanks again for your time!

Not sure where you are but if in a fairly large community then there may be a lapidary club and the stone could be cut with a diamond blade and polishing attempted. Some senior centers have lapidary equipment too so check around.

I have a piece of petrified drift wood that I found along the Rio Grande near Las Cruces, NM. I had the broken end cut at an angle and polished but left the rest natural and I displayed it at work as a paper weight/conversation piece for many years. It beautifully highlights the, almost flat, growth rings including the pores while leaving the rest to show the natural shape of drift wood.

Good luck.

Nah, you don't see it polished often. There are many rocks you don't see polished.
You got some good tips on polishing from arizau.

Hey found this rock in the river while fishing, looks cool so I took it. The middle dot is different colour on each side, Would love to know what it is. It feels kind of gritty to the touch. IMG_1289.JPG IMG_1289.JPG IMG_1289.JPG IMG_1289.JPG IMG_1289.JPG IMG_1289.JPG IMG_1289.JPG IMG_1289.JPG

This specimen came from my grandpa's collection. I'm new at this, so really don't have the equipment to test for all physical properties. Tired of endless, fruitless web searching so thought I'd see if anyone out there can help me! 20170326_091022_HDR-1.jpg 20170326_091035_HDR.jpg 20170326_090953_HDR.jpg 20170326_091507_HDR.jpg 20170326_091507_HDR.jpg
