I got out for about 4 hours or so this morning. My brother and I went to the colonial site I've been hitting (the copper field). Ran into a Pretty big downer right off the bat. Several people pheasant hunting in the cornfield. To assure the fact that my first find wasn't a face full of birdshot we had to hunt in an area that I'm not so sure about. I was worried that we wouldnt find much in this area but Within the first 10 minutes my brother calls me over. He is a newbie so this was his first button. Here is the button.

We continued to hit this area for a while and then I came across this nice pewter? spoon. I'm assuming this is late 1700's or very early 1800's. Any opinions here are appreciated.

We hit this site for another hour or so and came up with these items. The two buttons in the upper left of the picture are the ones my brother found today.

Here are the two buttons I was able to turn up today...Does anyone have any info on the button with the design on the front (looks like a pewter button?)

We went a little off the beaten path and searched in the woods for a while. Both my brother and I made identical finds here. Wheat pennies that someone used for target practice. Look carefully and you can see the wheat stalk on the back of the penny on the left. My brother found the one on the right.

My next find was what I think is a clipped colonial copper coin. Not really sure what it is. If anyone sees any detail let me know but i wont hope for any miracles. I put my only recent find in there for a size comparison (1979 nickel)

My last find of the day was an eyeball find. Spotted this arrowhead lying right on top of the ground.

Looks like a foot off of a cast iron cooking pot.

Agreed
How old are we talking here Incajoe and crusader. Same age as the spoon? (late 1700's early 1800's?)

That's hard to say. There were certainly footed cast iron cooking pots in colonial times (and before) but they made this type of pot right up through the 1900's. You wood need to see more of the specific pot in question to know it's age.

give my congrats to your brother for his first find ;D

I certainly will. Thanks for the support. I think he may be hooked now! ;D

nice old site and finds 'E'! yeah I'd say late 1700's to first half of 1800's on some of these finds. :)

You have a great bunch of items there. The Colonial-era buttons are mighty fine; the shot pennies are the first I've ever seen (I have one railroad cent that's a smooth oval, from an 1868 site & I don't want to think about what it maybe used to be); and I'd take a good shot at cleaning that partial copper, too.

We don't have 'em 'out west' here, and I'd want to give it my best shot to see if there's any detail hiding on either side. Must have been a fun hunt!

Thanks Admiral. I've found a few railroad squashed pennies as well. What you need to do with the one you found is chalk it up as an 1877 IH and just put it in the ABP column (about good/poor) Seriously, it kind of sucks when you cant ID something but its certainly better than finding nothing.

Killer digs!

Congrats to your bro on his firsts!

I got out late in the day and dug some holes...

It's good to hear that you didn't "catch" any bird shot ;)
