I got out for about 4 hours or so this morning. My brother and I went to the colonial site I've been hitting (the copper field). Ran into a Pretty big downer right off the bat. Several people pheasant hunting in the cornfield. To assure the fact that my first find wasn't a face full of birdshot we had to hunt in an area that I'm not so sure about. I was worried that we wouldnt find much in this area but Within the first 10 minutes my brother calls me over. He is a newbie so this was his first button. Here is the button.

We continued to hit this area for a while and then I came across this nice pewter? spoon. I'm assuming this is late 1700's or very early 1800's. Any opinions here are appreciated.

We hit this site for another hour or so and came up with these items. The two buttons in the upper left of the picture are the ones my brother found today.

Here are the two buttons I was able to turn up today...Does anyone have any info on the button with the design on the front (looks like a pewter button?)

We went a little off the beaten path and searched in the woods for a while. Both my brother and I made identical finds here. Wheat pennies that someone used for target practice. Look carefully and you can see the wheat stalk on the back of the penny on the left. My brother found the one on the right.

My next find was what I think is a clipped colonial copper coin. Not really sure what it is. If anyone sees any detail let me know but i wont hope for any miracles. I put my only recent find in there for a size comparison (1979 nickel)

My last find of the day was an eyeball find. Spotted this arrowhead lying right on top of the ground.

Those are some nice finds. I love the spoon. Nice buttons too.

Dig it-Ken

That spoon was definitely made in the early 1800's if not earlier. The way the handle meets the bowl is the giveaway. Nice buttons too. I think you have a nice early site there to explore. Is it possible to get a better photo of the clipped coin? I can't really see any detail in that photo because it's too dark.

Very nice job guys. Tell your brother "congrats". Looks like a very nice button.
What does the back mark say?
Some nice finds.

P.S. Next time bring an air horn with you. That should clear out the pheasants and hunters from the field. ;D

I'm not sure a better pic will help here. I cant really see any detail and I've looked at it very closely. Here are a few pictures anyway. I matched this coin up with some of my colonials and it is the exact same size (at least the piece that I have) as the Vermont coppers. Sorry about the lighting. I'm certainly no professional photographer.

The back mark says "Plated" and has stars around the edge. I'll pass on the congrats to him. The front of this button had silver colored (plating?) on it.

One for the junk bucket! :D

I agree with the age on the spoon, as well as the button being pewter. How big is the site? Are you into any iron? That's a nice early spot.

It's a pretty big site. Three large fields. Lots of iron but alot of it is farm junk from cornfields. Here is a pic of some of the iron i found today. The iron in the last three pictures was about a foot deep. Can anyone ID this item?

Looks like a foot off of a cast iron cooking pot.

You're right I can't see anything. Looks like some cleaning is your only hope of figuring out what that is/was. Try the peroxide method on it and repost with the results.

Will do incajoe but like I said I'm not hoping for any miracles. I have to make a run to the store to get the peroxide anyway. At least I boosted my copper totals for the year today. I'm up to 6 1/2 now.

lots of fun finds there... love the buttons.... ;D ;D ;D

How old are we talking here Incajoe and crusader. Same age as the spoon? (late 1700's early 1800's?)

Nothing is going to help that cut piece because there's nothing left to help.

Great finds! I agree with the rest on the spoon..I found one a few days ago almost exactly like yours...made of pewter and mine has a scalloped design on the base of the bowl....WTG! :D

Love those buttons and the clipped copper.....definitely a great site! :)

Awesome finds, those wheats are great! HH, Mike

I started cleaning my finds up a little and realized something pretty cool. I was trying to wash what i thought was dirt out of the dent in the wheat penny that i found and realized that it wasn't dirt. the bullet is still in the coin. It almost broke through but not quite. here are some better pictures.
