got some gold by accident

If you will allow a dead man to tell a little tale...

I walked into my old dump bank to use the coin machine to dump my loose change bucket. I asked the tellers if they had anything "fun" for me. Now I haven't been in this bank for, I guess, 2 - 3 months. The first teller says two dollar bills. The second says gold quarters.

I respond gold dollars? No gold quarters. Let me see them.

Sure enough she brings out gold quarters in US Mint wrappers. $120 worth. Uncirculated!

Here is the breakdown

Ohio 1 roll each P & D
Idaho 1 roll each P & D
Florida 1 roll each P & D
Michigan 3 rolls each P & D

I have never heard of these. My Redbook is packed away (house is for sale). Can anybody shine some light on these, and help an old CRHer out.

really weird... I did see that the mint made gold coins for companies only to sell, mabby they sent them to the wrong place
cool find anyway, hope its not plated or anything like that

The only gold state quarters that I am aware of are those that were done by Heartland or other similiar "collectors" organizations. They put a thin gold wash over the coins and sold them as a novelty collectible. There is no gold quarter listing that I can find in the 2011 Redbook.

I know that, just spitballin ideas, but those are VERY cool, DO NOT OPEN THE ROLLS, sorry, had to have that said just in case.
They are still wrapped so, all mint condition, still worth $$$ if not gold

Not to worry. These rolls are already in the safe. The boy in the avatar cannot get to them.

I have had mint rolls of NIFC halves that were that color. It was mostly on the coins towards the ends of the rolls. Whatever they are, there is no way in the world they are made of AU.

There are several companies that sell "after-market" 24 kt. gold plated state quarters, usually in fancy wooden boxes, etc.

But in the photo it looks like they are in US Mint wrappers, and I do not believe the US Mint gold plated any quarters.

It is possible they are the 24 kt. plated that someone stuck in those wrappers, but it wouldn't have been done by the US Mint.

maybe I came over a little strong on the title. I never believed they we AU. It's the color of gold I was referring to. Jim - Sorry to have taken you down that road.

They were stored in the same environment as the others. The owner could have been a smoker or the effect could have been caused by the box they were stored in. Sacrifice a roll by opening it up and you'll see what I mean. Or keep it as is, and the "enders" will protect the rest of the roll. What you have demonstrates the perfect reason for storing coins in an inert environment.

As far as I'm concerned, the coin wrappers are no where close to US govt. issued
called golden coins, collectable, so they say - in magazines and newspapers
Maybe gold clad, marked up a outrageous prices, not to mention the shipping cost.
