I was told by someone before that if you do not turn the GPS off on your phone while taking pictures in the field ppl can actually find where the picture was taken. Anyone else ever heard of this being possible? And if it is possible which I don't doubt, what is the best way to prevent ppl from being able to locate where your picture was taken? By turning off GPS? And if you have taken a picture while the GPS was on if you turn it off before posting can someone still find out where it was taken? Thanks in advance.

Yup. True.
As you state, disable GPS on phone.
I learned from a recent same topic thread, the amount of info that can be "uploaded" with a single pic.

Peace ✌

I was told the same thing, but then I'm e-challenged so I can't help you. I have also been told your vehicle's GPS knows where you went too. Sooo, if I find an awesome place, I'm biking or walking in, no cell phone either!

Use an old stand alone camera that has no GPS. OR ... use an older graphics editor on the phone pic that doesn't incorporate GPS, but that might tag your machine ID.

True information can be grabbed from smart phone pictures and wi fi cameras like my Olympus. Always disable location when taking pictures when hunting. The Adobe photo program will show longitude and latitude same as a smart phone.
Be safe and keep your hard earned spots safe.

Yes it is true, an exif viewer will read it if it isn't turned off..

Here is sample from a picture, (location turned off)..

longitude and latitude is the exact location of where picture was taken if it is turned on.

It all depends on what site you upload the pics too. Many sites have been stripping out all exif data for many years. Facebook removes, I'm pretty sure pinterest and photobucket strip data too.

Of course if you directly upload to here, it will probably still have the data.

It does, couple members posted their pics and it showed they were where they shouldn't have been. They pulled them down...
