Metal Detecting
Hello folks... I didn't find this ax head personally... my two grandsons (11-12) did last summer and I was surprised. They saw an OLD Whites Coinmaster MD at my home and asked what "that was". I told them a real old metal detector that Great Grandpa had. They asked if they could use it or my other one. My Whites XLT Spectrum was not an option without me along. But my late dads old one was. So off to the store I go to get a ton of D-cell batteries. It fired right up and seemed to work great... so out into the woods they go. It was about 100 that day... to hot for me. They were just off the front yard using it in the woods for a few minutes. Kyler runs back up to house and asks for a shovel because they found something "big". He takes shovel back and they dug for a long time. Next thing I know their heading down my ridge to my woodshop. Later they bring me this double headed ax head that they "cleaned up" with sandpaper. Believe it or not... this ax head is still sharp. I went to hole and they had dug about 10" down thru some rocks and roots. They wanted to know how old it is or what I thought.... I don't know.

So... they just asked me again if I found out anything. So another ax head story needs help. I bulldozed this entire opening in the woods including driveway to build upon and they found it about 40 yds. from my front door in the woods. Very fortunate for them and they were geeked up and I was tickled for them. So I grab my XLT and looked around the edge of my driveway and found some old shotgun head stamps and a small old lead musket ball. Maybe I need to look around some more next summer.

Any ideas folks on how old this ax head might be? How about the small musket ball? The shotgun head stamps I found out are late 1800's and early 1900's. Thanks for any insight on ax and ball.
