Great Day- SILVER , Owl, and other goodies!!! UPDATE 8/20

ModernMiner · Aug 18, 2007

My buddy Ridley found a great spot to MD. He's already uncovered numerous silver coins here, and I was lucky enough to find one he missed.

Found a great assortment today, and a few items that I could use some help IDing.
Here we go:
*A 1936 Merc dime - WILVER!!!

*Other coins were: 1941 Nickel , and 1951,53,57,& 58 Wheats.

*A very cool "Order Of Owls" pendant (?) that still has most of the gold gilt and paint on it. The back says "Design Pat. Aug. 10, 1907".
No idea what it is, but I think it's one of my coolest finds.

*A pin or badge (?) with letters "U" , "S", and "H" (?) on the front.
There was a small thumb attachment nut on the back too (pictured) before I snapped it off. :'(

It measures 25cm.
Any idea what this is?

*A button (16cm) with what looks like a "B" plus more design on the front.
Any idea on this one?

*Asst'd marbles. Not sure how old they are?

"DuffyTrash", are you out there?

All in all a great day of MDing for me.
Thanks for looking,
MM

Your unknown button may be U.S. Army Hospital staff button. Not sure, just a guess. Nice finds.

Re: Great Day- SILVER , Owl, and other goodies!!!

Owls, Order of (OOO). - South Bend, Indiana, was the city where this "animal" Lodge was born. John W. Talbot and a small group of his associates in November of 1904 formed this fraternal group. When it was founded, the order sought to assist its members in business and in employment, provide help to the widows and orphans of the deceased members, and to enjoy mutual fellowship with one another. This order has no relationship with the onetime Masonically related group, the Independent Order of Owls, that was organized in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1890.

The OOO has four degrees, plus the presence of a ritual, passwords, and fraternal grips. The ritual, as in most fraternal orders, is intended to be secret. The OOO publications (e.g., brochures) contend that its ritual has no religious elements. An older edition of the ritual states: "We advocate no creed. We know there are so many gods, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind. We believe that the art of being kind is all this world needs."

Membership has been open only to white males. During the early 1920s the OOO had over 600,000 members in 2,148 local Lodges, called "Nests." Since the 1920s, the order has been losing members rather significantly. Its 1979 membership roster has about 40,000 members.

Local units, as noted, are called "Nests." The national governing body is known as the "Supreme Nest." Its main officer is named "Supreme President."

Additional information may be gained by consulting William Whalen, Handbook of Secret Organizations, 1966; Arthur Preuss, A Dictionary of Secret and Other Societies, 1924.

Gypsy,
Very cool. Thanks for that info. South Bend, Ind. is right next to my hometown of LaPorte.
I really like this find. Now that I think about it, the date on the back is 100 years old just last week.
Thanks,
MM

Ridley

No problem. Thanks for leaving me a wilver. Remember where I found it? It was masked under that big chunk of metal. I'm glad I re-scanned the hole.
That place has a lot of neat finds to offer, not just coins.
Fun day today!

Thanks Kirk.
It's a GREAT day when I can beat Ridley out of a wilver.

I'm hoping to upgrade detectors this year. I just got my White's packet in the mail this week.
Have a good week, and keep your Bro away from your stash.

Nebstater,
I wonder if you are correct with your guess of "U.S. Army Hospital"? That sounds pretty good to me.
I put it in the "what is it" section too, and will hopefully get an answer.
Thanks,
MM

Ridley thinks the house may be 1920's. We only have permission to hunt outside unfortunately. I'd love to go in and start ripping out some boards to look for that hidden cache.
