Chinese
looks like a export piece.
Could be 300 years old or made yesterday.
They are still producing pottery in the same style and clays as they did for 100s of years.

The Chinese do have some very similar symbols maybe it was an opium pipe?

Is the hole the actual bowl or does a bowl with a stem sit in it? I have never seen a pipe of this style before.

By looking at the bottom it has the same shape as Chinese soup spoons.That might have been its inspiration.

looks like a old opium type pipe -- opium was popular even in the 1930's --it was quite common for the asain workers that worked on the railroads back in the late 1800 / early 1900 era to smoke opium ...since many white bar owners would not sell them booze of any type

So, is the hole in the top the bowl, or is it just a hole? You never answered.

Does the stem taper down flat like a mouthpiece as it appears?

If the answer is yes to both, then I'll say it's a contemporary homemade or studio hobbyist made piece. If the hole on the top is a straight hole and not an actual bowl then I'll say it's a small water pipe missing the stem/bowl piece. Looks a little too small for that though.

What are the dimensions anyway?

I will post pics with tape measure later it is pretty big the hole is the top of bowl and it doesn't tapper flat
