Hello Folks!

Nana was right, it was a nice day for detecting here in Alabama :D

Met up with Gary early yesterday morning at an older area where I've found some nice coins in the past. Didn't know if we were going to find any coins since the area has been hit pretty hard for decades.

Started off finding a bunch of square nails and bits of iron when I noticed in the distance what looked like a black box sitting on the side of a hill ???

Upon closer observation, I noticed the plastic box had it's contents spilled all over the ground (I'm thinking a wild animal discovered the box and knocked it over) and the box was partly filled with rain water. A bunch of kids toys and games, a deck of cards, keychain fan, trash bags, rubber porcupine, bubbles, bug spray, pens, beads, a plastic baggy containing a memo pad and a laminated sheet congratulating me that I just found a geocache! :D

Opened up the memo pad and this is what I saw. Nana and Diggerbug had already found the cache previously and signed the pad before I found it ;D ....What a coincidence :D

Never found a geocache before, but it was a pleasant surprise finding my first one. I signed my name and the date on a small slip of un-wet piece of paper and stuck it in the memo pad since it was already soaked with water which I couldn't sign :D

The laminated note said to take something from the box so I decided to take the bug spray and replaced with a few wheat pennies and a clad quarter I found at another site on the fort. Put all the toys and things back inside the box, closed it, and placed it back where it fell off along side of the hill and even placed a heavy rock on top hoping to keep another wild animal from knocking the box over again ;D

Nana came by for a few minutes, and I introduced myself and Gary before she left to go to a soccer game. I told her about the cache find and she smiled congratulating me ;D She had told me there was a very old tree with a snake etched on the side on the top of a hill. I told her I would try and find it and take a few pics. A half hour or so later, I finally found the tree :o

About an hour passed and met Nana again with Diggerbug and we all went to another area nearby to hunt.

Got to the new site and it wasn't long before I found my first and only coin of the day. A '19 merc :D

A little while later, I found what looks like a gold plated knife. Here's a few pics after cleaning and scanning

Here's a bottle found in the same area on top of the ground. It says "Fly -Tox" near the top. Can anyone ID it?

Well, everyone found some nice things yesterday. I have to congratulate all for finding what they dug and what a pleasure it was for meeting Nana and Diggerbug ;)

Thanks for looking and HH to all.......James

I think I recall some Fly Tox around the barn in the 1930s-40s. It was a fly spray that was used in the hand sprayers of the time. Must have been fairly mild as I'm sure Dad sprayed it directly on some of the animals as well as the structures.

Sounds like you had fun son... and that's the name of the game! Sometimes it's not what you find but the act of searching that matters. Anytime you have company as well, well that just makes it all the better.

Thanks for the reply Frodov!

I agree, you're so right about that. The act of searching certainly made it fun, especially detecting and meeting new friends to hunt with :D..... Go Kentucky Wildcats! ;)

Wow! I had no idea what it was used for, but it makes perfect sense to me. I appreciate that info!

Thanks RR for the reply! I clicked on the link and saw the bottle. Amazing seeing that bottle on ebay and to think I just found one lying on the ground ;D Hope the guy selling it get's top dollar! :D
I just might try it myself, but than again, it's a unique find and will most likely hold onto it since I rarely sell anything that's a metal detector find.
