Spent 4 hours at the old campground I've been hitting these past months, and had a pretty good day. I'll put up a full post later today with pics of everything I found, but I wanted to get this one up right away as I'm pretty excited about it even though I don't quite know what it is. It is pretty thick, and quite heavy, and appears to be a buckle or plate of some sort with US on it...

Any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated, as well as any tips on how best to clean it.

Re: Had a good day today... not sure what I've got though

I think just-geese is correct... If it were mine, I would use the peroxide method! Again...... If it were mine! Nice find

Re: Had a good day today... not sure what I've got though

Thanks for the quick replies. Could it be Civil War era, or is not that old?

Re: Had a good day today... not sure what I've got though - Civil War item?

I KNOW it is what they say. Civil War all the way!!!
Congratulations!!!

Check out this site.

Look halfway down the page at

"SC 0074 - Dug U.S. Rossette - lead filled back - ( 30 mm ) *$44.99"

And Yours is in WAY better shape!

Re: Had a good day today... not sure what I've got though - Civil War item?

I found a picture of a US bridle rosette that looks just like the one I found, and it is on a web site of Indian Wars collectibles listed as a US Cavalry bridle rosette - right near the bottom of the page...

http://www.thespiritoftheoldwest.com/AAA-IndianWars.htm

I suppose this could be a US Cavalry bridle rosette from the Indian Wars. Looking at a timetable of the Indian Wars, I noticed that the Modoc War took place 1872-3 in Northern California and Southern Oregon.

Any more tips on how to clean it properly would be greatly appreciated.

Nice Rosette!

Personally I'd use water and a gentle toothbrushing so as to keep the green patina on there.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

I vote Civil War era. The CW rossettes have a lead filled back. There is also a slight difference in the "Font" of the lettering. The Indian Wars era rossette has a "leaner" font. The CW is a little bolder. Also on the CW one you can see where the attachments were (even from the front). Here is one of each type that I have found. The first one is the CW era. The second is the IW era. Sorry, but I don't have a photo of the reverse of that one. But the IW rossette has a hollow back.

That's a GREAT find!
