Had a good day today... UPDATE: bridle rosette cleaned pics added

Spent 4 hours at the old campground I've been hitting these past months, and had a pretty good day. I'll put up a full post later today with pics of everything I found, but I wanted to get this one up right away as I'm pretty excited about it even though I don't quite know what it is. It is pretty thick, and quite heavy, and appears to be a buckle or plate of some sort with US on it...

Any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated, as well as any tips on how best to clean it.

I found some information in a history book of the town that I found this rosette in, and it turns out that Company M of the 1st Cavalry camped out in the town for two months in 1883. I suppose this rosette could have come from one of their horses.

I very lightly cleaned up the rosette with q-tips dipped in peroxide after running it under some warm water for a bit.
