If you for some reason can't get a hold of any halves are dimes your next choice? Read in the beginner thread dimes are his next choice, just curious if that is the general consensus. Or maybe if you can't get halves you skip it all together? Thanks.

:coffee2: I will generally leave with nothing. There's always another bank to check out for halfs. I don't do dimes because of problems with dumping them.

The good old dime magic trick the counter plays on you.

99% of my hunting is halves. If I happen to have spare time and no halves on order I will switch to dimes and quarters. I don't touch pennies or nickels, though. I'm only in it for the silver and war nickels don't really interest me.

I don't walk out of the bank without any rolls unless the tellers really don't have any coins to spare or cannot access the vault (if the vault teller leaves for the day, all access to the vault is gone too).
Dimes have been really bad for me this year but I've had a lot of fun searching through boxes of nickels, they come in $100 boxes and generally always produce either a buffalo nickel or a silver wartime nickel minted between (1942-1945) and will bear a large mintmark above the dome on the back of the coin.

I've done dimes almost exclusively the last 3 years. Halves just don't produce, and bore me to death.

No probs dumping. Let your bank know that you are dumping only dimes. Have them reimburse your account when the counter receipt says cents counted as dimes, its that simple.

I dump $500 bags of customer-rolled dimes over the counter, and get cash immediately, no paper trail.

We should all be so lucky. Many banks around here that have coin counters also have signs that read something similar to, "You get the total the coin machine says. No exceptions. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the machine." No bank here that has a coin counter will accept rolls, bagged or otherwise. They demand the coin go through the machine. Not one bank here will do the bag-for-cash thing either.

As for the OP's question, if I went to the bank(s) with $100 to "spend", I'd come home with $100 worth of something. Halves would be my first choice, but I'm coming home with $100 in coin unless no bank anywhere will sell me any. The gas money is already spent, might as well get something.

Halves >>> Dimes >>> Nickels

Both of these. HH, Maverick.

what do you mean no paper trail?dont you have to sign a receipt for the coin you turned in?

Intexas it is practically impossible to get halves bc they are obsolete and if you give them to a checker/waitress under 25 they don't want to take them so I usually resort to quarters and cents

Hey thanks for the opinions. I did end up finding a half shortage yesterday and ended up getting some dimes with no luck. Got my first "box" of halves today but it wasn't a box....apparently they switched to using sealed plastic bags, either way I have 500 dollars worth of halves, almost done going through them and still haven't found anything. You boys(dawg for 50 cent) were right about having to be patient and persistent!

Ya I know I can't start complaining yet, I have been watching the forum and I have seen some people going through some pretty huge amounts of coin without a thing. I can't say I didn't find anything, I did find a sintered planchet, some of those go for around 50 bucks on ebay.
