I located what appears to be a handmade screw in an area that also contains many handmade nails and items from the mid to late 1800s. There are a couple of puzzling features that I am trying to work out. From what I found online, early handmade screws were made from square nail stock and the threads were formed with a die and hand finished. It is clear that this was made from square stock as you can see the square core in areas that the threads have corroded away, and also at the tip. The puzzling part is the counter-bore design, and what appears to be a cross-recess (Philips) type engagement in the head which are more modern features. Any ideas on an approximate date range?
