Happy Father?s Day
Decided a quick hunt was what I wanted to do for my Father?s Day. So headed over to one of my mill house permissions all built in 1924. On Memorial Day I found two sterling qualification badges. Today I found what I think is the main marksman badge to the qualification badges. The qualification badges where found in on yard and todays find in the strip between that yard and the next mill house . Without a doubt my favorite finds have to be the old military items. I think these are WW2 era but not sure ? Can anyone confirm or is there a way to date them ? Thanks and happy swinging

I think that,s a U.S.Army badge, any time you qualified on a different weapon you,d add a badge to the basic iron cross shaped insignia.I could be wrong ,I was a Marine and we used a different system. As to date I,d guess post WWII,probably wrong there too,but no biggie.Surely at least one Army Infantryman can do better!Really nice,I like.

Nice finds. The Army Marksman badge you have is the design that was first adopted after 1921. Difficult to date. It is still used today in the current style. The sterling badges were still available in the PX in the 1970’s and even later into 1980’s from other sources. Again difficult to nail down a date on the one you have. The attaching bars are actually easier to date than the badges. These badges were not permanent and soldiers would routinely discard the basic Marksmanship badge when awarded the Sharpshooter or Expert badge. The Marksmanship badge were nicknamed “Bolo” badges by some because it indicated that you barely qualified and almost “Bolo’ed” or failed to qualify. Still a nice find….all the above from a career Army soldier….me.

Very nice military find. When I was in basic training at Fort Dix in 1965 we had to qualify with an M-14 rifle. I don't remember how many shots we had but if you hit a minimum of 30 targets you were awarded a "Marksman" badge, minimum of 45 got you a "Sharpshooter" badge which was similar design but with a "bullseye" on it like the one I dug a few years ago, and if you hit at least 60 targets you got an "Expert" badge, which had the bullseye and a wreath around the cross.
