I don't know about you guys, but it is hard diggin in north LA right now. Hand tools are almost useless. Has anyone tried one of those garden claws to dig a plug yet? The ones with the tee handle and the curved dig teeth.

I have never seen the ground as hard as it is in Texas right now. My Sampson shovel ain't even piercing it good enough to call detecting fun. A garden claw might make sense if it is only a inch or two.

Right now I'm using a sharpened 4" trenching spade with a 5' handle. It's getting the job done, but pretty bulky to pack around. Still have to chop up the plugs to find anything though.

You also have to be careful you don't damage the target.

I've never used one but I switched to a sharper garden trowel. I think I will just break down a get a real metal detecting knife. They have a thin, sharp blade designed just for the job we are doing but in rock hard soil anything is hard to use. That's what's kept me from going out the last few days besides the 90 degree temps. Maybe a rain dance is in order For all of us in the U.S.

You're digging in your own yard and you're complaining that it's too hard?? How about hitting it with a garden hose for a while to soften it up

I was digging in Austria and northern italy and I must say I have it good in Windsor Ontario. In Austria I couldn't go 3-4 inches before hitting crap loads of rocks the size of quarters and bigger.

McKinney you are so right on the Texas dirt being hard right now. It's not giving up its buried secrets easily. I can't wait for the late September cool down and possible rains
