Harrassing General Sherman's Left Flank

I forgot to post this when I returned home from a Thanksgiving trip to Georgia.

I have been chasing leads on some locations through Georgia where Sherman's March to the Sea took place. I have been harrassing his left flank for years looking for goodies and have done well.

The day before Thanksgiving, I was working an area near a roadway used by Sherman's forces when I came upon what I believe to have been a Picket Post guarding the old roadway which is still in use today.

I had hunted this area before but today was different. A small area had been cleared for some minor construction. The topsoil had been removed and a spot about 40 yards wide was laid bare. I stepped out of my truck walked about 5 feet and when I put my detector in action, boom, I dug the first of 4 Williams Cleanouts. During a really quick flurry, I dug two three ringers, what I believe to be a Sharpe's Carbine Projectile, (I also found the base of the cartridge), a pistol bullet, three melted or flattened projectiles and one carved bullet along with a small piece of brass. All these came from an area about 12 feet in circumference, thus my surmise that this was a picket post probably occupied over a short period of time by more than one Union Soldier. I hunted the remainder of the clearing for a good long while and found nothing else. In this general area, is a large encampment that I am still looking for. I believe I now know where it is but I have to wait till Deer Season is over to go into the woods looking. Gun shots were ringing out all over the woods the day I was there and even though I had an orange vest and hat, I didn't feel that getting into thick woods with all that going on was a good idea. I do have permission to hunt the area.

The day before, I found a S.C. State Seal Button in another location not associated with this one but I left it at my Mother In Law's Home so no pic here for that. I won't return there till after the holiday season. The button was heavily damaged with the rear piece missing.

The Union Troops in this Picket Post area were from Michigan and were assigned to protect the Cavalry of General Kilpatrick's rear as Fighting Joe Wheeler's Confederate Cavalry was making life miserable for him.

Thanks For Looking!

DaChief!

Those are in Great shape!
Congratulations.

It would seem appropriate that while you are digging projectiles in a battle area you should have gunshots for your background. Nice specimens too. Be careful out there.

All look like union spents, the ones in the middle with tail peices are Williams Cleaners. Definatley Shermans troops....nice finds, good research!

Re: Harrassing General Sherman's Left Flank

Real good finds! It is my understanding that one cleaner bullet was issued with each pack of 20 bullets. However, the zinc ring used to clean the fouling in the barrel heated up quickly and made the rifle kick real bad so many soldiers discarded them from the pack quickly. Cleaner bullets are fun to detect because the zinc ring makes them sound good. You did well to recover that little piece of CW history. Continued luck!

Hey DA CHIEF you DA Man,

I only go up to GA to hunt for gold in NW GA. Will have to see about Sherman's March too. Hadn't thought about doing MDing for relics like that. Still trying to learn the relic mode on my MXT. Not much here around Chobee tho. Have you ever heard of Ft. Drum? It's north of Okeechobee city about 8 maybe 10 miles north on US441. Ft. Drum is an old fort built during the SEminole War days. If you'd think you would like to try it let me know and I'll try to get permission 1 weekend (now private property) and meet you up there. Send me an E-mail
brewerkay34@yahoo.com, if you like. Have a Sheriff's Deputy here told me he's been up there and found a lot of things (lots of woods tho). Later olegator :o
