Any ideas on this buckle? It says R Harris Pat. Dec. 22 1885, not finding anything with that date. Any help is appreciated, thanks

In December 1885, R. Harris likely refers to Charles R. Harris, an inventor from Williamsport, Pennsylvania. While there is no record of a patent granted to C.R. Harris specifically on December 22, 1885, he did receive several patents around that time for "Improvements in Suspenders" and "Clasps for Suspenders". It is possible your suspender clip was made around this time, and the December 22, 1885, date refers to the date of manufacture or another significant event rather than a patent filing.
History of R. Harris's inventions
Charles R. Harris's Patents: While the specific patent is not listed under the date Dec. 22, 1885, Charles R. Harris received several patents for suspender-related innovations in the mid-1880s. His patents focused on improved suspender clasps and reinforcements, which he filed from his home in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Suspender Reinforcements: In a patent filed by C. R. Harris, he describes a design for improving the durability of suspenders by reinforcing the material with a thin layer of metal, such as sheet metal or wire cloth. This metal lining was placed between fabric or leather layers, especially in the "back and heart" portions of the suspenders.
Innovative Clasps: Another patent by Harris describes an improved clasp design. The clasp featured a V-shaped body portion that pivoted on an eyelet, which was meant to be simple, durable, and easy to use. This would have allowed users to attach and detach their suspenders more easily.
Context in suspender history: These inventions occurred during a period of rapid development for suspender technology. Metal clips were first invented in 1894, making suspender attachments buttonless. However, inventors like Harris were already creating more innovative and reliable clasps in the 1880s to improve upon the traditional leather loops and buttons.
Importance of the patent date
It's possible that the Dec. 22, 1885 date on your clip refers to a specific patent granted to Charles R. Harris around that time, and the record for that patent does not currently show up in search results. It was common for inventors to mark their products with patent dates to protect their inventions and show their authenticity. Since suspenders were a necessary piece of apparel for men with high-waisted trousers, the demand for more comfortable and functional clasps was high throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
