What ya have to remember is, that using mediums was a TREND in that "time period"... AND!
Even Prez Abe Lincoln's wife used a medium during the CONFEDERATE WAR, after their son died. Check it OUT!
...and most of the Hart brothers search was based on the vision of a medium.
...and Pauline Innis's fried was Jean Dixon and Innis was also interested in the paranormal.

Heh... TREASURE! WHAT ELSE!

But I wasn't talking about them finding treasure. They researched the Beale expedition, therefore, there own story was not a cover story for the CSA treasure. And they wouldn't have believed the Beale story to be a cover story, otherwise they would not have been requesting information from Santa Fe about the Expedition.

"Unanswered is the question as to why he (ward) wrote the story...It is believed that before the matter is dropped a study should be made of the logistics of Captain Beale's alleged journey into the uncharted region north of Santa Fe".
Letter from Lt Thomas Fawcett to Col William Friedman, 30 April, 1949
No evidence was ever found that Captain Beale's journey ever occurred.

So, when the subject, during his trance, claimed he could see not only the alleged buried treasure, but would be able to lead us to it, we determined to test him out...
Hart Papers
"My brother, Clayton, and I discussed the séance, not believing anything the that transpired, and, still, wondering if there could be a possibility of some truth in what the subject had blurted forth"- THE HART PAPERS, George L Hart
With that statement concerning what the medium revealed which is a major portion of the Hart Papers, is George Hart also revealing his doubts about the Beale treasure story?

The Harts are responsible for claiming "Jefferson" for the "J" in Thomas J Beale.
...and the mention of the PLANTER'S HOTEL, which Claudine Fulton Ellis latched onto for her tale about discovering the "lost" Beale letter, that incidentally, has become lost once again.
A very common happening once a book about Beale based on "discovered" items is placed on sale.

It should also be noted, as with the original 1885 Beale Papers where the "unknown author" made himself a first person character and included his "agent" as a character in the presented story, the Harts, Clayton and George, also placed themselves as characters in their "alleged" version of the Beale treasure story.

No the Harts obtained the cipher papers in 1897 according to George Hart Papers. The Hart Brothers do not confirm the ciphers but Clayton Hart interviews James Beverly Ward and his son in 1903 and they both confirm the Beale Treasure Story. But this is third hand information. James Beverly Ward and son to Clayton Hart and Clayton Hart to his brother George Hart. This may or may not confirm the story. As Jean Laf says we still need two more confirmations to make the story true.
"About the year 1903 Clayton visited Mr Ward...he confirmed all that is contained in the pamphlet"- THE HART PAPERS
That does NOT state that Ward confirmed the "Beale Treasure Story" as true, just what was contained in the pamphlet, another play on words similar to Ward's "authentic statements".
The interpretation is totally left to the reader to discern the actual meaning.

Reading from a medium is pure Witchcraft !
Considering that the Hart's employed and based their Beale search on the visions of a medium, Crypto, I doubt that Laf really considers that a confirmation of the Beale tale.
Reckon he wouldn't accept Claudine Fulton Ellis as confirmation either.
