A US visitor who came last year & had a short hunt with us was eager to have a second attempt (he did manage 1 Roman Coin previously). However, this visit was at our worst possible period, but boy did we luck in. A couple of days ago, one of our farmers harvested his Barley, this is very unusual & he thinks he was one of the first in the whole country 8) I asked him when was the last time you harvested in June, he replied, the summer of 1976 :o , one of the hottest Summers on record, with the water supply running dry & stand pipes in the streets etc..
Not only had he harvested but he had ploughed up the middle section of the field, & being quite sandy, it fell flat
The down side was that this field had been tried a couple of years back & we only had 1 Roman Coin & hardly anything else :-\
But it wasn't long before I sniffed out a Roman Coin scatter & we were off :headbang:
I got 11 Roman Coins in 2 hours & Dad was helping the visitor dig & GPSing duties. Thankfully the US guy got 2 Scrappies, 1881 Farthing, button, Medieval hasp, & a brass window latch. :) (not pictured)
So a field we thought little of & wasn't even on the radar is now something to look forward to this weekend.

1620s Royal Farthing
Broken Tudor Buckle
Lead Cloth Seal with cloth still inside :o
4 Album coins, 1 of which is a new reverse type we need (Bull) :icon_thumright:

Thanks for that story,
4th Century Commemorative Coin ;D

Not a commemorative Roman Coin as such, as this has a defined meaning in Roman coin collecting; ie. a coin made after the death of an Emperor or commemorating the founding of Cities.
very interesting,
I can understand the tighter definitions with the many different Roman coin series.
The US mint has put out what they call 'Commemoratives' in Gold, Silver and Clad for almost every (rather) significant event in US history, mostly for collectors/investors rather than general currency.
Events as important as the 1984 Olympics ::)
They are nice strikes and usually available for close to spot.
You sure got some Nice Album Coins there
